How much do they think an extra $75 is going to take them? That's like chump change in the grand scheme of things.

What do the current students care? By the time GSU begins FBS ball those students aren't going to be paying the fee anyway.GannonFan wrote:How much do they think an extra $75 is going to take them? That's like chump change in the grand scheme of things.
Re: Georgia So Students vote to increase fees for stadium, F
$75 * 20,000 students gets you $1.5/yr. Not a ton, but it'll take some of the edge off what the school and alums have to take on.GannonFan wrote:How much do they think an extra $75 is going to take them? That's like chump change in the grand scheme of things.
Re: Georgia So Students vote to increase fees for stadium, F
Actually, it's $75 per semester, so right now, between $2.75 & $3.0 million per year. Maybe more if a percentage will be charged for summer semester.ASUG8 wrote:$75 * 20,000 students gets you $1.5/yr. I love me some FCS football, but I do believe it's time for GSU to move up. Believe me, I'm not one of the ones (and most GSU fans aren't either) who believe that we're too good for FCS. We have left one hell of a mark on this division and now is the time. The stars are all aligned...the momentum is there, the fans are there, the administration is all aboard, the students are solidly behind it, so I think it's time for a new challenge.dbackjon wrote:Baldy wrote: Actually, it's $75 per semester, so right now, between $2.75 & $3.0 million per year. You sound remarkably like a lot of ASU fans. I just don't want to land in some shitty conference.Baldy wrote:I love me some FCS football, but I do believe it's time for GSU to move up. I'm with Baldy. I don't WANT to move up, but it seems that that is what is best for the program. The FCS just can't seem to get any respect no matter what they do. Case in point: ESPN shows Temple playing Wyoming in a bowl game while GSU and NDSU play on ESPNU. Why? It's certainly not because people think bowls are more exciting than playoffs or because TU and Wyoming were better than GSU and NDSU.

Re: Georgia So Students vote to increase fees for stadium, F
Baldy is right... this is something that should have been done over 20 years ago. As for the numbers, the extra fees should raise about $3.5mm. When you are FBS you get better payouts form BCS teams so add $1mm there. Add the increased attendance, license sales, conference revenue sharing, etc. and it should get GSU's athletic budget into the $18mm range. That's enough to do the move and be successful in the niche GSU is likely to fall in to.
The president of the university laid it all out and made a very compelling argument for the move, how it benefits the university as a whole, and he is exactly right. If you are a supporter and one who has the overall best interest of the university at heart you have to see that Keel is right.
However, I am a fan also, which means that logic and purity of thought is thrown out the window. I like the playoffs. Period. The playoffs are what makes small college football great and are what GSU built its name on. I only go to the best home games at GSU (Wofford, App, Chatty, homecoming, if there is a real good OOC) but I go to ALL the playoff games.
Therefore, I have mixed emotions. I know it is the right and best thing but IMO we'll be losing the best thing about the program at the same time.

We're both fucked for FBS membership by being in small markets. Y'all may technically be in Savannah market, like we are technically in Charlotte's market. But, conferences don't give a shit.
Watching us get passed over by UNCC was a shot to the gut.
Both of our schools should have moved up before television $$ became the prime mover in FBS conference realignment.

Question: What do you do if the admin pulls the old bait-and-switch, keeps the fees in place to fund something else (or to line the president's pocket), and leaves football fans high and dry? We've seen that before at Sac State, and I hope it doesn't happen to you. Georgia Southern is a great program with a proud history of contributing to the I-AA/FCS conversation, and GSU sports fans don't deserve to be jerked around by a two-faced administration as we Hornet fans have. I really hope it doesn't turn out like that for you.

Another advantage for GSU is the fact that they may not have to join the Sun Belt, with the realignment CUSA may be hurting for some schools which would give the Eagles some good national exposure and play against some pretty good ball teams.

Re: Georgia So Students vote to increase fees for stadium, F
A large portion of the "bait and switch" had to do with Spanos not living up to his $10M pledge. (Sac State only saw $1M of it.) So our pres took the money intended for a new on-campus events center and put it towards the football fieldhouse. Both were/are needed, but I am glad we got the fieldhouse instead of the events center. The events center will happen...eventually, but with the fieldhouse, it makes the university be committed to supporting football.SuperHornet wrote:Question: What do you do if the admin pulls the old bait-and-switch, keeps the fees in place to fund something else (or to line the president's pocket), and leaves football fans high and dry? That may be true, SD, but I'm still put out with the administration (yes, I know it goes back to the Fat Man, not Gonzo) for backing out of the deal that would have given the university a softball/baseball complex for essentially nothing....

I think what you want is for a state school to have their student body make decisions that will impact all students that follow.

Without a true market, GSU would do itself a favor by ditching that boring, sleep inducing run offense that no football fan outside of Statesboro wants to see in favor of a more balanced pass friendly attack. You can vote for FBS all you want. That running shit ain't gonna get you into the FBS. I guarantee you it won't.
