Wyoming coach outburst w/ Video

Post by BisoNation »

Video of the Wyoming Head Coach lashing out at the Air Force head coach. I guess this is what happens when you coach for a 1-5 team in Laramie, Wyoming whose only win is over Idaho. Apparently he thought an Air Force player faked an injury and questioned their coach's integrity. I think he needs to look in the mirror. I'd be embarrassed if he coached at my school. The Mountain West issued a public reprimand and apparently that is all the punishment he will get.

Oh also, apparently the "faked injury" occurred when Air Force had 3 timeouts remaining, so I really question it's importance in the outcome of the game.

It was important to the game in that the Air Force QB had his helmet fly off, which meant he had to come out of the game and the backup QB had to come in.. but since Dietz went down with an "injury" it gave the backup QB time to get loose and come in the game for the game winning TD rather than having to come in cold as a quick substitution. BS move, but whatever.. in Wyoming we don't kill 'em with kindness, and Troy was not treated kindly in Laramie.

Air Force's backup won the game for them on that play?

If you want to question another coach's integrity I don't think cursing him out on camera is the best choice. I understand heat of the moment and the emotions of football, but a head coach can't act like that no matter what. Especially not in college.

The backup came in and ran into the endzone for a touchdown.

Wow. I'm no fan of the Air Force, but THAT goes WAY beyond the pale.

I don't believe the conference should have any say in the matter beyond suspension (contrary to that crap the Big Ten considered), but if I were the Wyoming A/D, I would SERIOUSLY consider firing the guy under the moral turpitude clause....

This is a joke, this guy is obviously reaching to find any excuse possible to say why his team lost. The fact that they would purposefully delay time to get their backup ready makes no sense, you warm up before the game and your not just standing still on the sideline. Even then if he came in without warming up and getting loose he ran the ball, no throwing at all. He just embarrassed himself and the Wyoming football program. :twocents:

What is wrong with his post? He is spot on. No excuse for the way the Wyoming coach acted.

Wyoming is getting blanked by Fresno 35-0 at the half. Wonder what coaches excuse will be for this one?

Some of you dumbasses have no idea what goes on in football or football coaching. Dave Christensen is a bit old school, but he's a damn fine coach and a stand-up guy. He took Wyoming to a bowl last year, and that's no easy feat. Plus, he's not out there pulling an Idaho and bringing in a bunch of sketchy kids to try and succeed.

Plus, if you think players don't stay down from injuries, you're an idiot. I know most coaches tell their players, "if you take a knock, don't ever run off the field. Stay down and wait for the trainers to escort you off the field." Why? Because it allows the the coach time to get their personnel up, allows the back-ups to get mentally ready, and allows for more time for the injured player to get back to fit so he doesn't have to sit out plays.

This type of jabbering goes back and forth a lot on the field. If you don't like manly men, don't watch football. It just isn't for you. And jeezus, if you think this is bad, don't even think about going to a hockey game.

1) This type of jabbering does not go on on the field, when have you ever seen a player be allowed to have a 20 second outburst like that?

2) This wasn't "on the field". Technically it took place on the field, but it was between coaches after the game and completely lacked sportsmanship.

I'm not a little boy, I played football. I know what goes on. But what happened here is not acceptable.

And you talk about "manly men," he got held back by his daughter.

I disagree, I've been involved in much worse incidents on the field that just never happened to be caught on camera. The only reason this is a big deal is because someone stuck a camera in the guy's face. Plus, he yelled at a guy and cussed him out over what he (rightly) perceived as a lack of ethics... it just happens to be something that happens all the time in football. He didn't go blindside the guy with a backelbow or something like that. If the opposing coach can't handle getting yelled at, then he's not cut out for the job (but he clearly was more than able to handle it).

There is a BOATLOAD of pressure put on these coaches to win. Yet, people act like they should just tolerate losing, even when they think they were screwed. You can't have it both ways, either winning is important or it isn't. And again, he didn't actually do anything to the other coach... yelling at a guy and voicing an opinion is hardly a huge deal.

I understand your point and agree with some of it. But in my opinion, a coach can't act like that. Notice he's screaming F-bombs at the other coach in front of his team, and even fans or whoever those people on the sideline were. I'm fine with him calling the AF coach out, just not the manner he did it.

No one likes to lose, but you have to keep your emotions in check in post game handshakes. If your excuse is because we lost and the other team did something questionable it makes it okay, then every week we could see a brawl at midfield.

One thing that is true for all great coaches, and I mean guys who are truly loved as coaches not guys who just win and move out of a program (_______ insert name here), is that the great ones treat their kids as though they were quite literally, "their kids."

When you have good kids who work their ass off in practice, play their hearts out, make good life-decisions by going to class and doing all the essential college work, and then they lose a game because of something you perceive as unethical.... well, that's something that is going to make you rabid.

I'm sure Coach Christensen wishes he could re-choose his words and articulate his point without coming across as someone close to violence (although he never did get violent or really threaten violence). But he shouldn't back down for wanting to see his kids win and challenging something he thought was wrong that could've decided the game. Frankly, I'd want to play for a guy who wants his team to win enough to go berserk on an opposing coach he thought bent the rules to win.

This sort of reminds me of Coach Gundy a few years back blasting the reporter for calling out his kid. Clearly, he got defensive about someone calling his players to task just like Christensen got upset about seeing his kids lose in such a manner.

Talk about a harsh penalty. Fined $50k and suspended for a week. Seems a bit excessive, but sends a clear message.
