Not a bad choice. It's a little unusual for the preseason #1 to get this award, though.

I think it should've gone to Hameline.

Who?

My (admittedly myopic) vote goes to Marshall Sperbeck....

Walt Hameline is Wagner's coach (since 1981, apparently).

Well, since nobody that I know of expected Wagner to even SNIFF the playoffs, he would be a good choice....

NDSU played against Coach Robinson in the 1965 Pecan Bowl for NDSU's first National Championship. There were several future NFL players on that Grambling team. Eddie Jr was the Grambling QB.

Thanks for the info I remember Robinson's players asking why they never play against non-HBCU schools. He said "we can only play whoever is on the schedule" they had to deal with segreation as we all know.

Not quite. The Pecan Bowl was one of four regional playoff bowls in the NCAA College Division, and the national champion was selected from the winners of those four bowls. It was originally held in Abilene, TX before moving to Arlington. In THIS case, the winner of the Pecan Bowl was chosen, but winning ANY of these bowls was no guarantee of being named national champions. While the names are no longer official, some people still consider these games to exist as the Elite Eight. The Pecan Bowl is reserved for the Midwest Region. This has been the case since 1981, though we haven't had official regions for quite some time. Whoever's running the appropriate Wiki pages has been using whichever QF game was closest, I guess. This year's Pecan Bowl winner was SHSU. NDSU has won the Pecan Bowl three times (assuming that one accepts the "modern" version of it).

The other regional bowls were the Camellia Bowl (West Region, in Sacramento), the Boardwalk Bowl (East Region, in Atlantic City), and the Grantland Rice Bowl (Mideast Region, in Murfreesboro, TN). Since 1981, the Grantland Rice Bowl has referred to the hypothetical South Region. Amazingly, Sac State has been to the the Camellia Bowl ONCE, where they got trounced by Montana State. Ugh!

Correct. UNI won the first Pecan Bowl. Counting the second incarnation in the FCS playoffs, UNI is 4-1, and didn't lose until 2007.
