Statesboro, GA -
Longtime Wofford football head coach Mike Ayers interviewed for the same opening at Georgia Southern University Wednesday, a Wofford University spokesman confirms to 7 On Your Side.
Wofford Sports Information Director Brent Williamson says Ayers met with GSU athletic officials Wednesday afternoon.
The school is seeking a replacement for Jeff Monken, who left last month for the top job at Army.
Ayers could not be reached for comment.
Ayers has been the head coach with the Terriers since 1988.
During the 2013 season, the team ended with a 5-6 overall record.
Ayers has received several awards including The Sports Network’s 2003 Eddie Robinson Award as Division I-AA’s National Coach of the Year, the SoCon Coach of the Year five times in the last 10 seasons, and the AFCA regional honor four times.
According to reports, Georgia Southern had been turned down by at least two other coaches during the past week.

Didn't Ayers say no to other FBS jobs in the past?
Maybe he wants some money

I fail to see how the Army job is a step up from GA Southern. Just don't see it. He's ALREADY moving up to FBS, and Ga South probably whoops Army's ass 99 times out of a hundred with their CURRENT athletes. Now he has to go live in that godforsaken upstate New York climate???
What a maroon....I question his intelligence.

$
Army was paying their previous coach almost 3x as much as Monken made at Georgia Southern. I don't know if a final figure has been announced for Monken's new contract... but, I think it's safe to assume it's quite a bit more than he made at GSU.

NO, I have spoken with the coach and he looks at being a coach at Army as serving his country. Coach comes from a long Military family and he was the only one who did not server in the military. I told him serving in the military is great, but 99% of the guys would trade their life in the military for being a Head Coach at GSU. If this was Middle TN or Ball ST. he would still be at GSU.

wut?
Ellerson was paid $401,500 at Army. Monken was making $400K at Georgia Southern.
Reports are that Army is going to pay him about $800K with a 6 year contract.
I don't question his intelligence at all. Army has a much lower ceiling but will pay him 2X the money. Good for him, and good for us.

What do you think about Ayers at GSU? (maybe, obvisouly)

I think Ayers would be a good choice. It certainly came as a shock that he would even interview. I have always thought he was the best coach in the league, bar none. Watching him out coach everyone we've had over the last 12+ years has been frustrating. It's amazing what he's done with such a smaller pool of "athletes" compared to everyone else in the conference. I would certainly love to see what he could go with the talent we have on our team.

I agree. I always thought his strong point was the old doing more with less argument. Would be very interesting to see what he can accomplish at GSU.
Side note, does he bring his OC with him. If so, Sparkle City just leaped into panic city.

Coaching at Army is serving your country like sleeping at a Holiday Inn Express is flying the space shuttle.

Don't make fun at him. He comes from a Military Family, and from what I get from him. He really wanted to serve his Country. But coaching Football was first from him.

Ok, fine I get that
But serving your country is much more than being a vasity coach at a service academy.
Seems like you can twist just about every kind of job into 'serving your country' today.

Monken's base salary was $250k according to your AD.
And, maybe this wasn't Ellerson's base salary or it's just wrong? But, I was getting a 600k figure from here. It has a .pdf link to his actual contract, but I don't care enough to look through it.

Regardless, Monken will be making a lot more money.

So? Mark Richt's base salary is $405K and Paul Johnson's is $335K, also. I hope you don't believe that is what their actual salary is.
As for Ellerson, I don't care enough to read the contract either, but from what articles I've seen he got a $200K base salary, $200K "public relations performance payment", and a bonus of $300K if Army finished .500 or better in a season. Needless to say, he didn't get the $300K.

Ok. You're crazy.
Mark Richt's base salary is $3.2 million. It was increased from $2.81 million last year.
Not even in the ballpark, Baldy.
The board approved an increase in Richt's base compensation from $2.81 million to $3.2 million and added a year to his contract, taking him through 2017

Looks like you were right in this case in 2009. But, no longer close to being accurate...
