Learned of this by reading a Zem2 post on the McNeese board then Googled it. This is transfer news that merits its own thread:

Big 12 pre season defensive player of the year no less. And there's a reason he was selected as such.

Wonder how guilty he actually was. Doesn't look like he was found guilty but the school suspended him for an "honor code" violation.

Its an unfortunate situation. I do wonder what this "preponderance of evidence" happens to be.

Anyhow, as is my way with FBS transfers, I would like to see how he does once he suits up for SFA. he sounds like a good one if he was named preseason player of the year, but he won't have a ton of time to adjust to the new school and defensive scheme

I'm in TX now and a TCU season tix holder. Fields has great talent.. no doubt about that.. but he has had character issues while at TCU. This latest incident wasn't his first and unless he makes a serious turnaround.. it won't be his last.

That's too bad to see these kids that could play in the NFL dick around in college and end up not even getting a chance down the road thinking about what could have been.

Looked up his bio on the TCU site and he made a big splash as a freshman then didn't play much as a sophomore due to a suspension followed by an injury. Here's some text on his freshman year from his bio:
posted 53 tackles, including 34 solo stops ... led the team with 18.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 sacks ... was first in the Big 12 at 1.42 tackles for loss per game and third in the league with 0.77 sacks per game ... his 10 sacks tied for the fourth-most in a season in TCU history and are the most by a freshman ... has forced two fumbles and recovered another ... also posted an interception of Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein

We faced Fields last year when we played TCU. He was supposed to be suspended but Patterson played him in the second half due to the game being tight. He finished with one assisted tackle and wasn't much of a factor when he was in there. Very good talent though.

Yes he only saw action in 3 games during 2013 and during those only had three tackles and one assist. So people tabbing him to be the Big 12 defensive player of the year were undoubtably looking at what he did as a freshman in 2012.

Don't get me wrong, he's a phenomenal talent, but if you watch game video from two years ago, a lot of the damage he does is vs one-on-one blocking, or when he's left completely unblocked. TCU had a great defense and he was a freshman, so I'm sure opponents weren't targeting him in their game plans. Tough to make anything of last year due to injuries and suspensions, but you can bet he'll draw the attention of OC's in the Southland Conference. One of the keys to being a great pass rusher having someone else on the defense who draws attention.

Not sure if you caught the part where I said he's a "phenomenal talent."

false alarm. clean your trousers.
After originally agreeing to grant a release to Devonte Fields, which would allow him to enroll and play football at Stephen F. Austin, Texas Christian University has since convened a committee and declared that Fields does not meet the requirements to attain the one-time transfer waiver.

The decision by TCU renders Fields ineligible, prohibiting him from participating in football related activities at SFA for at least one year. In light of these developments, Fields has decided not to enroll at SFA and will not be a member of the Lumberjack football team.

SFA head football coach Clint Conque will have no comment, stating this a decision of Texas Christian University and is a matter involving Fields and TCU.

SFA will be a lot better on the coaching change alone ... they have talent. Biggest thing will be the adjustment from an Air Raid mentality to a more physical style of play. The way their schedule shapes up, they'll likely be 3-1 heading into the UCA game which promises to be a dandy ... wouldn't mind having a ticket to that one!
