Colorado State Pueblo Pistol Whipping Sam Houston State
40-7 Colorado State Pueblo in the 3rd quarter. An illustration of the fact that top D-II is not a cupcake for a FCS team.

Remember guys, as I've posted before: When you're talking about the very top of D-II and the very top of I-AA/FCS there isn't much if any difference. We've had two meetings between the I-AA champion and the D-II champion in history and it's 1-1 with each win being by 3 points.

I wouldn't call a 21 point win "struggling".Grizalltheway wrote:Wow, and Eastern struggled with these ****?
Struggling would be what's going on right now in Missoula.

There was that Pittsburgh St. vs. Youngstown matchup in the '90s where YSU won 10-7. What was the other one?JohnStOnge wrote:Remember guys, as I've posted before: When you're talking about the very top of D-II and the very top of I-AA/FCS there isn't much if any difference. And yes, I've always said the very top of DII (top 5 for sure, maybe top 10) is just as good as the top 10 of FCS. And I've always said that West Chester would be a two TD favorite on Delaware St every year - the FCS label doesn't make a team better than DII.

Don't forget that FAU made it to the semifinals in 2003 and they were curb stomped by Valdosta State that year. Granted that was a pretty weak playoff field that saw Colgate going to the finals (no offense, Delaware).
Even so, SHSU is most likely not a top 40 FCS with a showing like this.

Three years in a row, North Alabama would have competed for the FCS crown but only got one chance to prove it. They lost by a field goal at Youngstown State who won back to back championships at that time. We have a powerful team this season with only 4 senior starters. We may not win three in a row again but back to back looks very possible. Of course everyone comes up with silly excuses for not giving us an invite. We have the money and have been upgrading facilities. There must be some other reason.

Actually it's been a while. The two meetings between I-AA and D-II champions were as follows:There was that Pittsburgh St. vs. Youngstown matchup in the '90s where YSU won 10-7. What was the other one?
1980 D-II champ Cal Poly 23, I-AA champ Boise State 20
1994 I-AA champ Youngstown State 17, D-II champ North Alabama 14

1980 was a curious time for D-1AA and D-2. 1AA started in 1978 with just a handful of teams. Delaware won the D2 championship in 79 just before beginning the transition to D-1AA and probably would have taken any of the handful of teams that had made the switch already.

In certain circumstances, D-II schools can take kids who don't qualify at the D-I level, FBS or FCS, and often times they can get those kids on partials because they have no other options. Not to mention eligibility clock is determined by number of semesters, not calender years. In other words, at the D-I level, you have five consecutive years to play four once you enroll full-time ... at a D-II, you have 10 semesters, and can sit out and pick back up where you left off ... if you're part-time, is doesn't count. That's why you see a lot of older guys in D-II.

Re: Colorado State Pueblo Pistol Whipping Sam Houston State
Not a "directional." A specific point (Pueblo). In all seriousness, though, I can understand being upset on how dominant the D-II was. That was a surprise. But it's pretty clear that from the standpoint of a FCS having to play them Colorado State Pueblo is a very good football team. In my opinion, most years, a team in the top 5 or so of D-II can play with and have a chance to beat anybody in FCS. There's not the kind of difference between the top of D-II and the top of FCS as there is between the top of FCS and the top of FBS.htownbearkat wrote:I dont care, its just sick to end a 22 game home winning streak to directional CO. We needed a last second FG to beat D-II Central Washington in '08, the year we knocked off JMU on the road and went to the NC game. Definitely some solid teams to be found there.JohnStOnge wrote:Not a "directional." A specific point (Pueblo). In all seriousness, though, I can understand being upset on how dominant the D-II was. BTW, on the fact that it was a dominant performance by the D-II:htownbearkat wrote:I dont care, its just sick to end a 22 game home winning streak to directional CO. We suck this year in so many ways. getting worse as the weeks go by. SMH!!!
As someone pointed out, there is an example of a very good I-AA/FCS team being blown out by a playoff caliber D-II in the past. In 2003 D-II playoff participant Valdosta State clubbed I-AA semifinalist Florida Atlantic 45-17.
Sam Houston State had a 22 game home winning streak. But that "directional CO" went into the contest having won 38 straight regular season games. Sam Houston State was playing a program that had gone 34-3 over the previous three seasons (with the losses, of course, coming in the playoffs). If any Sam Houston State fan thought they were playing a "rent a win" in that game they were very mistaken. If they didn't realize the Bearkats were going to have their hands full, they should have.

North Alabama knocked off FBS Southwestern Louisiana (Louisiana-Lafayette) in 1997, 48-42. Should have moved up long ago but stayed D2 to continue to host the D2 National Championship Game and Harlon Hill Award Ceremony.
