#4 Griz @ #1 Bison: NDSU Wins 22-10 Defensive Game

Post by Gil Dobie »

Is this going to be revenge for 2003, close game or Bison victory?

It's looking close, with the Bison WR being the difference that I can see. Both have good defenses and can stop the run. Just think the Bison D-Backs are a little better than the Griz D-Backs. 24-14 NDSU win.

My heart says we eek out a close win, but my head says something like this. I think our D is good enough to slow them down, but unless we get some kind of consistency on offense and special teams, it won't be enough to outscore them.

As much as I'd love to see the Griz win, I think this one's going to be ugly. Bison have the ability to take away the run, so Montana's Oline needs to protect Johnson a little better than they have been. In the two games I've watched, he hasn't made great reads and seemed to be running around for his life quite a bit.

Griz are within 10 or so at the half and end up losing by 24.

Johnson's been impatient & panicky. He played better against SoDak than he did against Wyoming, but he's still forcing some things even when he's not been pressured. USD didn't pressure him that much, honestly, but he was still playing like they were.

I don't see a blowout. NDSU's offense has a lot of question marks, and the Griz have yet to commit a turnover this season.

Thats what happens when you have a guy playing QB that had taken 95% of his snaps in shotgun formation and then all of a sudden you want him to be able to run a pro style offense, of course he gonna be impatient and panicky.

They gotta let the reigns loose and let the dice roll for the Griz to have any sort of chance this weekend..

I could be wrong, but it seems like they had him out of the gun a lot more often last season.

I tink the Griz can win, but believe NDSU has been so accustomed to mistake free football, it is going to be a rare game that the Griz win.

In case you hadn't noticed, the Griz have yet to turn the ball over this season. If we can continue that in this game, we've got more than a fighting chance.

Seriously? He did play in this offense all of last season, ya know, and he wasn't as panicky then.

One streak that won't be in jeapardy this weekend is the 19 straight road wins for the Bison. They have not lost a road game since the EWU playoff game.

It is not that hard to fathom.
NDSU defeats ISU by 20 on the road with 34 unanswered points
What is NDSU's average margin of victory this year
If you have watched all three Griz games, they don't look good-
The Griz lost to Wyoming their biggest matchup
How many points have the Bison given up in the 4th quarter this year?
25/46 for 211 passing against Wyoming
6/17 third down conversion Wyoming
rushed for 42 yards Wyoming
Wyoming is not Iowa State. Wyoming played Oregon about the same as USD

I would love to see Montana win, and will cheer for them, put watching them play and watching NDSU play, this is going to be ugly, unless the 3rd and 4th stringers give up points in the 4th

Fargo Media view of the game
The cut-and-dried key to the game

Jordan Johnson

I’m not going to need the Father of Football to dissect the key to this game: rushing the football. That’s it.

Specifically for NDSU, stopping the Grizzlies’ running game is probably priority A and there’s no need to look further than the Montana stats this season. Wyoming shut the Griz down to just 42 yards rushing forcing quarterback Jordan Johnson to the air. He completed 24 of 45 for 185 yards and the Cowboys took a 17-12 win.

Last week, the Griz ground game got going against South Dakota to the tune of over 200 yards. It meant Johnson only had to attempt 27 passes with 16 completions. Statistically anyway, it’s apparent that Johnson’s comfort zone in the passing department does not match that of Eastern Washington’s Vernon Adams, who would think nothing of putting up 50 attempts per game. Johnson’s game is all about controlling the offense and putting his guys in the right spots. It’s called balance.

If it sounds familiar to NDSU fans, it should. It’s what Brock Jensen did so well, especially his last couple of years. Jensen’s passing stats weren’t eye popping, but the almighty statistic of games won was. So if Johnson needs 25 passing attempts or less, it could be a good day for the Grizzlies. If he’s winging it 40 to 50 times, it could be a good day for the Bison.
