Beau Baldwin to Montana?

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

A lot of the recent candidate lists seem to be nothing more than info from boosters that may or may not be in the know and may or may not be trying to shift the conversation rather than tell the truth (and then there's PlayerRep on eGriz claiming there will be a "backlash" if Hauck isn't hired  :? ). However, there is an interesting comment from Billings Gazette sportswriter Greg Rachac about Baldwin:
I do know he put in for the job.

He'd be crazy not to test that water if for nothing more than leverage with his contract at Eastern. His salary is not that far behind Montana's and needs to be increased as well as the assistants. It might also put more pressure on EWU to get further down the road with the Gateway Project considering Montana's recent commitment to facilities.

With what we have coming back next year compared to Montana and a shot at another NC on the resume I would be VERY surprised if he jumped for Montana. It wouldn't necessarily be better for his long-term aspirations. I'm more concerned with the CSU job opening up. I'm guessing Mac would put in a good word for Beau.

Assuming it's true that most big financial donors to athletics (including the family that just committed $7 million for the new athletic building project) are supporting Bobby Hauck, doesn't it make sense that those donors would be disappointed (and perhaps more than disappointed) if Hauck was not selected. Wouldn't it be easier to raise the rest of the $14 million for the project if Hauck was selected? This assumes that a candidate is not determined to be far superior to Hauck. Then that would be an important factor.

He needs to show good faith this weekend and send a signal by punting on 2nd down

Agreed. Or Baldwin could bench Kupp for unspecified reasons. Then I might consider the guy legit.

However, I just don't see the man moving from EWU to Montana. It would be a step up in every regard. Yet with a little more patience he is in a good position to make an even bigger jump. Chances are he will be offered elsewhere 3X the potential paycheck available in Missoula. I'd be OK if Montana hired the guy, yet he is not the ideal candidate for the school.

Its been kicked around that we want to move up in the next few years, which could be exactly what Hauck and Baldwin are looking for.

I agree, if we stay FCS, there's no reason Baldwin should come here, but if moving up is a possibility, I think he'd highly consider it. :twocents:

True, but look at the recruits we're landing. Add in the champion's center, and it's maybe, possibly, kind of, sort of looking like it's not a far fetched pipe dream...

I'm not saying I'm for it or against it, but the move-up crowd has more ammo now than they've ever had before. It sure sounds like Haslam might be leaning that way, too.

No. It would be a lateral move in geography.

Otherwise it is at least a minimal step up in every regard.

Technically it'd be a move slightly to the southeast. :ugeek:

But in terms of facilities, fan and donor support, tradition, recruiting leverage...yes. Definitely a step up.

How many years has eGriz been around? Honestly, Hauck coming back to UM is way more interesting a topic than moving up!

I thought of this immediately when the rumors started. Still, where is Montana moving too?

So you don't think he's a good enough coach to win with all of the aforementioned things at his disposal? :?

Of course he would win there. But I don't see him leaving two of the best weapons in FCS history to prove it. :coffee:

A KXLY reporter is tweeting that Beau commented at practice today that the only FCS school he will coach at is EWU.

Yes there is. It's probably the top "program" in FCS. For sure in the top 2 along with North Dakota State. I'm talking about in terms of consistency, fan support, etc.

Last year Eastern Washington finished with an average home attendance of 7,822 vs. Montana's 24,380. BTW North Dakota State averaged 18,622. For some reason I'm having difficulty finding attendance stats to date for this year at the NCAA site but I'm sure the basic picture is the same.

Montana, as a program, simply has more potential than Eastern Washington does. It is what it is.

Just go to ESPN.com and they have the attendance for all FCS games in the box scores:

vs SHSU - 10,310
vs MW - 9,116
vs ISU - 11,256
vs UNC - 10,064
vs UND - 9,212
vs UM - 11,339
Avg over six home games=10,216

My honest opinion is that he'll be a very legitimate candidate for the vacated Colorado State job.

As for Montana - I doubt he'd allow himself to be quoted like that if he were serious about taking that job. He may not be coaching at Eastern next year, but I doubt he'll be at Montana, either, unless you guys are moving up in the off-season.

UM averaged 25,404 and EWU averaged 10,216, FWIW.
