That actually made me decide to look up the definition of "convocation." I'd always heard it in association with religious gatherings.

Usually, it is. But I believe that the dictionary definition is closer to a general meeting of everyone around for a specific purpose. At a school like Liberty, it would be like going to church, except in the school's arena, sort of like you expected, JSO. At a non-faith-based school, it would probably look more like your grade school's all-school assembly.
