Griz LB Gamboa suspended for season opener after arrest

If the Montana Grizzlies are to beat the four-time defending national champions, they'll have to do so without their starting outside linebacker.

Herbert Gamboa, a senior on the Montana football team, has been suspended for the Grizzlies' season opener against North Dakota State on Aug. 29.

Gamboa will sit out Montana's highly anticipated and nationally televised game for violating team and athletic department rules following his arrest late last week in Missoula.

Pretty minor shit really, but I suppose it's the right decision in light of the program's recent past.

His backup, Lebsock, is pretty solid though, so if we lose the game, it won't be because of this.

This is DEFINITELY the right way to go about it. Some idiots would have called for the kid's head from the get-go. Had UM pulled THAT crap, they would have had at least egg on their face, if not a wrongful termination suit, had the kid been exonerated. It's easy to rescind a suspension; it's not so easy to re-admit a kid that you've wrongly kicked out....

He got arrested for FIGHTING, not MURDER.

Wrongful termination suit?

Jesus fuck...

I don't know how you manage to amaze me more and more every time you post, and rarely ever in a good way, but you do

You wouldn't want to hear what I did last weekend shooting. These 3 dingleberries thought both of them should be kicked off campus and sent packing for besmirching the name of Montana. Really? A dumb schuffle and an unpaid ticket?

Okee-dokee.

Shit's getting ridiculous with players paying way too high of a price for minor transgressions. Yeah, I understand the political (ly correct) atmosphere in Missoula right now and a new coach who righfully wants to set some standards of accountabilty, but be smart about it. Fuck, suspend him, if you have to, for the first conference game.

Still going to be a tough game for the Bison, even with Gamboa out.

It's the slippery slope theory, and the bogus idea some academicians have that ALL athletes are a drag on the university and should be eliminated from the campus. There's no validity to that argument, but it's out there, on every campus. A kid gets so much as a parking ticket, and some people want them thrown out. It's stupid, but it's there....

So...Am I the only one that things that he should have been suspended for the first game? When I played the coaches made it VERY clear that if you put yourself in the situation of a fight, whether you started it or not, you will be gone for at least 1 game. You represent not only the team, but everyone on campus. Coach told us that fighting at a party was just like walking off the field and punching a fan after a game.

I agree. I didn’t bother to read any details about what happened (don’t really care to be honest), but if he broke team rules then why should fans not expect some kind of a suspension. I guess the outrage is based on that he has to sit for the NDSU game and not a Panhandle Poly Tech State type of opponent.

GATW - "but I suppose it's the right decision"
and AZ was simply commenting on SuperHornets off the wall "wrongful termination" comment

Oh, the outrage!

I think you should read a little less into what people post. :?

Do you really think a college kid having too many at a party and puffing his chest isn't minor, in the grand scheme of things? There weren't even any punches thrown.

Sounds like he put himself in a bad situation...either way the coaches deemed it worthy of a suspension. I sense a little outrage coming from you.

And I said it was probably the right decision, especially in light of the program's recent history.

You wanna quit digging now? :kisswink:

Well your coach is an idiot, it's nowhere near the same thing.

If a player is defending themselves there should be zero consequences.

It's just a fight. That shit shouldn't even be illegal.

Agree.

There are other ways to punish without also punishing the team.
