The STATS Senior FCS Editor Lists his possible candidates for Coach of the Year listed in alphabetical order.
Bruce Barnum (Portland State)
Jamey Chadwell (Charleston Southern)
Rick Chamberlin (Dayton)
Mike Houston (The Citadel)
Tim Murphy (Harvard)
Danny Rocco (Richmond)
Matt Viator (McNeese State)

Any one of these guys would be an excellent choice, but the Homer in me is going to be disappointed if Coach Barnum isn't the winner

It has to be Barnum at least at this point.

There's really a school called "Charleston Southern"?

Right now, IMO, it's a two-man race between the PSU coach and the Chuck South coach. By rights, though, it SHOULD go to the PSU coach, as the Vikes have come out of nowhere to be on the cusp of a seed, while Chuck South has been "right there" for the last few years, just needing something unusual like the horrible season in Lynchburg and a surprise loss on the part of CCU to start making noise.
Given ECB, though, it will probably go to Chuck South.

I'm bias....but Chadwell at Charleston Southern and Houston at Citadel are my picks.
CSU has a small private school budget and bad facilities, modest history at best.
Citadel of course has the military school challenge.
Both coaches have achieved great things at schools that have extra challenges when compared to larger traditional public schools.

Barnum.
And Bailey is #2.

The Citadel was picked to finish seventh in an eight-team league. They are undefeated in the conference and assured of at least a share of the SoCon championship with one conference game left.
Houston - COY.

Houston or Cbadwell. They clearly did the most with the lowest expectations.

Chadwell is an asshole with a big, obnoxious mouth. That disqualifies him.

My only real criticism about Barnum is that he sticks to long with the run game, especially if it isn't there. When we played Cal Poly he said in the third quarter he ditched the playbook, went 5 wide and told Alex to improvise. Maybe he should do that earlier and let Alex just make it up as he goes along.

I'll admit...he has some inner Spurrier about him. We love him obviously.

It's between Portland State's Coach and El Cid's Coach. Both have their team performing at a much higher level than expected.

Everyone has a case. If Chadwell goes 9-2, 8-0 in FCS and a national seed, it goes to him IMO. With the high school facilities and 2,000 student attendance at CSU, what he has done is unthinkable and I'm surprised he hasn't won it all 3 years there. Much better situation at all schools mentioned above.

Chadwell is definitely in the mix, but CSU was expected to be decent this season- at least in the top 3 in the BSC. The Citadel was (as usual) predicted to be in the basement, only ahead of VMI. Houston's turnaround of this team put him in the driver's seat, IMO.

Just a correction I think attendance is 4 or 5,000 not 2000. A little bigger than that.
They should've won it in 2013 just fell on face in final 2 games. 2014 Coastal was definitely the best team. Not CSU.

That's true. Chadwell may be Coach of the Half Decade for the last few years. But we expected a great season. Citadel was predicted near last...and honestly...suffered a very tough early season loss to CSU....and responded by rattling off a tear through the SoCon and possibly winning the league and being undefeated in SoCon. Yeah....if he beats UTC...Houston gets it.

Viator should win since the author picked Sam Houston State and McNeese exceeded expectations.

If either El Cid or Chuck South run the table in their conference their coaches should win.
Have a strong feeling Harvard will be 11-0 and Murphy will win it, though.

Just want to mention that Viator's team was picked third in its league and had the toughest slated among contenders. That's because there are 11 teams in the Southland and each team plays 9 league games so that each team skips one conference team.
The team not on Sam Houston State's schedule is Southeastern Louisiana
The team not on Southeastern Louisiana's schedule is Sam Houston State
The team not on Central Arkansas' schedule is Incarnate Word. That sounds like an easy one but it turns out that Incarnate Word is now 4th in the 9 team league with a 4-3 conference record and 5-4 overall.
The team McNeese didn't play is Houston Baptist; which is 0-6 in league play and 2-7 overall.
As the article noted Viator has never had a losing season and is the Southland's all time leader in conference wins. He needs to win in the playoffs in order to cement his legacy. But he's done a really good, consistent job.

Here's your stone cold lock of the century of the week: Harvard will not win 11 games this year.

Barnum should get it. I mean you look at that situation, and then look at the mind boggling results of the North Texas and Washington State games? Give that man medal
No I don't know how they lost to UND or UNC, but I think the good vastly outweighs the bad

If I had a vote it would go to the CSU coach. He has done a great job with mediocre high school facilities. Can't imagine anyone else getting it, but possible I guess. Their program isn't very well known.
