Charleston Southern vs The Citadel round 2! Buckle up boys.

Oh my goodness. Citadel just won an incredibly good game at Coastal. And secured a game @ Charleston Southern next week....round 2 of playoffs....2nd meeting this season. The last one in September was CSUs 3rd straight win and...let's say it wasn't the most polite game we've ever seen. Most in the Charleston area and alumni of both schools assumed they'd never play again any time soon since it wasn't schedule any more in the future.

Well....my goodness....as Citadel and CSU won some wondered how crazy it would be if they did meet again afterall....in the playoffs!! What seemed like a very unlikely scenario...just happened.

Unlike the last 3....I'm staying quiet on this one. It'd hard to beat a team twice in one season. CSU has its work cut out and Citadel is absolutely red hot....they're 8-1 since playing CSU with wins over Coastal and South Carolina the last 2 weeks.

Game on boys. Buckle up!!

I didn't think you guys would have a chance against the winner of this game. However Cid's defensive secondary is horrible. CSU should be able to put up some serious points against the Bulldogs. Your defensive front 7 is better than the Beachchickens as well. I expect a good game. El Cid has a great offense and obviously will try to shorten the game with their triple option offense, but the CSU offense should be able to score a lot of points as well. Should be a good one.
Good luck.

I'll take Chuck South in a nailbiter. Citadel has had to expend a ton of energy in back to back weeks and CSU is rested.

I proudly led some elderly, Citadel fans that I'm sure fought at Gettysburg, in a rousing chant of "beat them BUCS!"

That's one advantage we might have. It'd no secret it's hard for a team to get mentally "up" repeated weeks. Brain needs a break eventually. Citadel has had the SoCon outright championship game vs Chattanooga, the USC Gamecocks game and the Coastal playoff game all in consecutive weeks. Has to have taken a mental toll on them. Obviously a huge amount of positive payoff.

But....after September...I know Citadel folks won't have ANY problem being amped for CSU.

As you can see from my position matchups, The Citadel is probably the better team overall. However, the Bulldogs just match up terribly to Charleston Southern. CSU has completely shut down the run this year, allowing just 110 ypg and 3.3 ypc, and they've given up less than 200 rushing yards in every game this season (even against Alabama & their first meeting against The Citadel's ancient-school T-formation option attack). The Bulldogs' own run defense has improved vastly since an awful September, but they will also have to take full advantage of their noticeable special teams edge if they want to win this.

Here's my assessment of the matchups & my pick for the game:

      • Quarterbacks -- The Citadel

        Running Backs - The Citadel

        Receivers/TEs - Charleston Southern

        Offensive Line - The Citadel

        Defensive Line - (push)

        Linebackers --- Charleston Southern

        Secondary ---- The Citadel

        Kicking ------ The Citadel

        Punting ------ The Citadel

        Return Teams - (push)

        Kickoffs ------ The Citadel

        • The Citadel 17-23 Charleston Southern

Somebody on our message board referred to CSU as BCLA-

Baptist College, Ladson - Approximately

I guess UCLA would sort of work too - University of Charleston, Ladson Area

Ha! SEE....this is what starts the trash talk. Kinda like it. I've always preferred College of Highway 78.

But as I said....beating a team that is basically of equal talent twice in one year is hard....doing it 4 times in a row is nearly impossible. And CSU/Citadel teams are just about equal in ability and coaching, so I hate to say it, but I don't like our odds.

Prediction:
Baptist College - Ladson Approximately : 27
Confederate A&M : 31

I agree with all of this besides QB's and Secondary.

First off, I'm always weary of calling a triple option QB a QB. I believe Brown is a much better QUARTERBACK, and has the ability to really murder defenses in multiple ways (see Coastal and Liberty, 550 yards and 6 TDs combined in the two games from an "option QB"). So I would add Allen, which is a PHENOMENAL player, to the stable of RB's and keep RB's in Citadel's favor, but QUARTERBACK goes to CSU.

Also, I believe the secondary should be more of a push as you've called it. I don't know much about the safeties for CSU but I know both of their corners are straight STUDS.

Honestly, I have no clue who takes this game boys. No clue. I don't even want to post a prediction. Couldn't get tickets so I'm gonna crack open a cold brew at 12:45 and watch this one on ESPN3.

With a gun to my head, I say CSU's nationally ranked defense shows up for the test, holds The Citadel to 20 points, and it's just enough for CSU to advance.

21-20 Charleston Southern

I've always heard UCLA.

There's also:

UNC - University of North Charleston

Baptist College at I-26

Ladson College

CID, hows you're 1st string QB? Will he be playing? Your 2nd stringer did well last week.

The best hope for CSU is to neutralize Tyler from running the ball.

Huh?

Dom played the whole game last week. He was only out for the last quarter of the VMI game.

Cam Jackson also runs at QB when needed, but he is much more dangerous at A back

I don't think you understand the triple option very well if you think QBs & RBs in that offense are the same thing. All of the decision making goes through the quarterback position.

CSU's quarterbacks obviously have more passing yards than The Citadel's, but they still don't have a lot. The rushing yardage also isn't close seeing as the Bucs' two QBs have less than 350 rushing yards combined.

No way. Never said they were the same thing. But a QB in a triple option as run heavy as it was against Coastal, is basically a glorified RB. The glorified part being because of the reads/decision making, etc.

Tracey Ham back in the day at Georgia Southern in I-AA was a quarterback. He was about as dominant a quarterback as I-AA/FCS has ever seen. Tommy Frazier at Nebraska in 1995/1996 when they squashed Florida in the de facto I-A "national championship" game was a quarterback.

They're quarterbacks with respect to the offenses they're running. They have to make split second decisions every play.

If you can stop the run, you can beat them.

CSU stopped the dive and the QB follow back in September and they won.

If they do it again they will win again.

That said, I think they will have some success on D, but not as much as the first time. Our D will probably be better too.

Big plays and mistakes/turnovers will be the difference.

It sounds like Madden, but The Citadel has around 40 passing yards last weekend. They run they ball, usually up the right, with Tyler.

And CID, I was going off what the CitDel fans were telling me. I shouldn't have trusted those crusty, CSA vets.

Yep. This game will come down to a handful of things, as the teams are about dead even.

1. Turnovers. Critical in every game.
2. CSU D vs Citadel dive. If we stop it we likely win. If not....probably don't.
3. Citadel 3rd down D. CSU all year has picked up crucial 3rd downs, especially passing. CSU has 3 excellent WRS and a good passer.

That's the ball game if you ask me. Citadels pass rush/coverage on 3rd down and CSU stopping the run on 1st and 2 D down. Mix in turnovers and that's gonna decide it.
