Now McNeese may lose its head coach

Post by JohnStOnge »

Well crap. Already a suck week for McNeese fans and now this:

http://www.thenewsstar.com/story/sports ... /77094606/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
McNeese State’s Matt Viator and Arkansas State offensive coordinator Walt Bell have emerged as two finalists for the vacant head-coaching position at ULM.
If it happens it'll be the second time McNeese lost a successful head coach so he could go destroy himself in the hell hole that is the University of Louisiana at Monroe football program. The first time was after Bobby Keasler, who actually won pretty much the playoffs, went to Louisiana Monroe after the Cowboys lost to eventual national champ UMass by 2 points in the 1998 playoffs.

Of course that destroyed his career. I just don't get why ANYBODY would want to be head coach at Louisiana Monroe. If you want to go to a FBS school wait until an opportunity arises where you have SOME chance of success.

My brother said that maybe there's a bright side if he goes because maybe then McNeese will win some playoff games again. But I just don't know. He's the winningest coach in McNeese history and has the most consecutive winning seasons in McNeese history. Surely his luck in the playoffs would have to change at some point. Right?

Looks like Willie Fritz is leaving GeoSo for Tulane.

EWU QB's Coach and Passing Game Coordinator Zak Hill just got hired as the OC at Hawaii.

Zak coached two Payton Award Winners (Eric Meyer, Bo Levi Mitchell), a two time Payton runner-up in Vernon Adams and AA Matt Nichols in between.

It was only a matter of time. Maybe if we're lucky he'll come back to EWU someday. 8-)

They'd be 13-0 if he was starting instead of Rivers.

They were Northeast Louisiana back then and they were a solid I-AA program. They over reached in going I-A. They do not have the resource level in terms of finances or fan support to complete at that level. I looked it up the other day and as far as I can tell they've got the smallest athletic department budget in FBS and it's smaller than the athletic department budgets of 48 schools on the FCS level. They have only had one winning season among 22 seasons in I-A/FBS football.

As I probably said already this appears to make sense only in that if Matt Viator is thinking about his retirement years it's another University of Louisiana system school and his retirement will be be based on the highest salary he made. My understanding is that he made a little over $140,000 at McNeese and ULM offered him around $400,000.

If you were a young coach starting out you might not do that because you pretty much know odds are if you got to Louisiana Monroe you're going to be fired after maybe four to five years. But if you're thinking retirement it makes sense to go ahead and establish the "highest salary" thing.

Haha. Rivers is good, I like him but man he has had some shitty players around him. The front office has failed Rivers miserably for the last 5 years or so. :ohno:

Um, no.

1. Dan Fouts
2. John Hadl
3. Drew Brees

4. Stan Humphries

Those three were/are consistent as heck for their entire careers, while Humphries had ONE decent season that ended in one of the worst Super Bowls of all time....
