Tomorrow, University of Idaho President Chuck Staben will make an announcement regarding the future of Vandal football.
On March 1st, the Sunbelt announced that following the 2017 season, the conference would not be renewing Idaho’s football only membership (New Mexico State was voted out as well). Given the lack of a future conference affiliation, speculation grew that Idaho would seek to find a more local schedule, likely by dropping down to FCS play.
FCS sources tell FootballScoop this is the route Idaho intends to move and the official conference affiliation will be announced tomorrow.

Just what the Big Sky needed, more dead weight.

Kind of a no-brainer, IMO. Just from a scheduling perspective, they'd have a tough time getting even 5 home games playing FBS with an independent schedule. I actually think this gives them the opportunity to breathe some life into their football program, even if most of their fans don't want to admit it.

A lot of teams fail after moving up, but I think Idaho is unique in that they actually become worse in absolute terms. The old Big Sky Vandal teams would kick the I-A/FBS Vandal teams' asses.

The University of Idaho announced today it will accept an invitation to play football in the Big Sky Conference beginning in fall 2018, pending approval by the State Board of Education.
“I understand the magnitude of this decision and the strong opinions that surround it, both for and against, but joining the Big Sky Conference is the best possible course for our athletics program and for our university,” said Chuck Staben, UI president. “We have carefully weighed our options and concluded that competing as an independent with an extremely uncertain future conference affiliation would be irresponsible when we have the alternative of joining one of the most stable FCS conferences. The Big Sky allows us to renew traditional rivalries and offers our athletes the opportunity to excel, just as they do in our other Big Sky sports programs.”

They didn't before Idaho left. It will be interesting to see how your alma mater fares this time around.

Good God I hope so....ideally, we give UND back to MFVC, absorb NMSU (who I think will come to the same conclusion) and go like this:
UM
MSU
EWU
Idaho
Weber
Idaho State
UNC
Cal Poly
Cal Davis
Suck State
PSU
NAU
SUU
NMSU

UND never belonged to the MVFC. They were your mistake from the start

What's the point of divisions without a conference title game?

by "give back" I meant "a conference where they actually fall within the footprint."

They are a worse team now than when they played in the Big Sky. No question.

If they ran them as two separate, 7 member football conferences (Big Sky and Great Northwest, For example), then you would have TWO autobids.
Big Sky
NAU
SUU
Sac State
Cal Poly
UC-Davis
UNC
UND
Great Northwest
EWU
Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
Weber State
Portland State
Play each team in your football conference (3 H, 3 A) 2 from other conference (1 H, 1 A) 3 other OOC

Yep. But goddamn, that's a long, stretched out conference from Sac State to UND.
