Bottom line is what would you rather be:

Team A. Pull the plug on the season mid summer.
Benefits:
-Save $$$ on testing & all the steps you have to take to bring the players back.
-No one loses a season of eligibility or burns a redshirt.
Negatives:
-Lose some top players to transfer.
-Lose some recruits (current & future). Teams attempting a season gain a leg up on you.
-Lose $$$ from $$$ game.
-Lose a couple months practice and being able to play a handful of games before the season likely cancelled.

Team B. Attempt the season.
Benefits:
-Don't lose some top players to transfer.
-Keep current recruits & gain future (exposure & benefit from one of the teams attempting to play; gain leg up on teams not playing).
-Likely get $$$ from your $$$ game (either played this season, rescheduled future season, or buyout).
-Likely gain a couple months practice & a handful of games that teams pulling the plug early don't get.
-If likely 4 games or less, no one loses a season of eligibility or burns a redshirt. In the unlikely event played close to a full season, win-win.
Negative:
-Have to spend a ton of $$$ on steps to bring players back in July (testing, constantly sanitizing everything, etc).

I want to be Team B, despite the season likely being cancelled on the season in Sept or Oct after only a handful of games played.

What if you're Team B and your season gets cancelled in October because your asthmatic defensive lineman got COVID-19 from a teammate and died?

Still want to be Team B?

Yep.

What if the season was cancelled, but that asthmatic lineman still got the China Virus from a classmate, or a party, or stayed home and got it from a family member or friend?

Meanwhile...UCONN suspends its season and 9 Idaho players test positive.

Less than 10% chance this season is happening.

Nah, the big boys are more at risk from a player's rebellion (ala the Pac-12) than they are COVID. UConn and Idaho have always been poster-childs for football programs on the brink - heck, this could be the final push for UConn to give up football altogether (just joined Big East for everything but football and football is still on the hook for paying the AAC $17M for when they left the conference for the nomadic life of an independent).

Cover up on reporting and protocols at CSU. You’ll see more and more stories like this. The resource rich P5 have a chance to still play but anyone else would surprise me.

The P5 are desperate to play as the money is that significant. Heck, they could just play every other week, use the two weeks in between to test, isolate, and retest to bring players back, and they would probably be just fine. The season would only be 7 games but they'd be able to get through it without too much concern.

I agree with you on the others - if you aren't making money, and a good chunk of it from football, then there's no reason to play this fall at the college level. That's why the vast majority of FCS won't play (it's cheaper not to play for them) and why many of the FBS won't play. But I think you'll see some stragglers in the G5 conferences play. Ohio schools, for instance, I think are more keen on playing and could still scratch something out.

BDKJMU wrote: Tue Aug 04, 2020 3:25 pm Not to mention if you pull the plug early, you lose your leverage in getting paid for those $$ games (either buyout because of broken contract by I-A school, or rescheduled for a future season). Ex JMU will get at least 500k from UNC IF JMU doesn't pull the plug early.
-UNC will either host UCONN or JMU as their OOC. If JMU, JMU gets 500k.
-or the game will be rescheduled for a future season (probably for more than 500K).
-or UNC will have to pay for breaking the contract (I don't believe force majeure would apply since UNC isn't cancelling their season, and I believe the buyout is much higher than $500k).
Well, that means JMU @ UNC for 500k. Hopefully that game is 1st in Sept before the season gets cancelled. Also UCONN was sheduled to play UVA (less than 1 hr from JMU), Liberty (1.5 hrs from JMU), and ODU (3 hrs from JMU), so JMU could get end up with several I-A games scheduled. Whether or not they would happen is a different story.

Less than 10% chance entire season (10+ games & playoffs) happens.
Better than 50/50% get a few games in.

Looking better than it did a month ago with all the conferences pulling fall sports. Hey, we even had an AGS preseason poll.

Big Sky cancels 2020 season. Considering an 8 game Spring season.

I’m guessing the rest of FCS will be fine by October.

Unreal. I hope Montana pulls a JMU and goes rogue. Do a 10 game OOC season and be the OOC competition for every team in the MWC.

That would be epic.

Well, only 5 of 13 conferences haven't thrown in the towel. 5 of 10 AQ conferences.

Still left MVFC, OVC, So-Con, Big South, Southland (minus Monmouth & Hampton). Basically all you're almost exclusively red state conferences, + JMU, ELon, Robert Morris. Maybe a couple Big Sky? Apparently playoffs would only remain scheduled if 1/2 of playoff eligible tried to play. Apparently its right around that # now.

A spring season is dumb. Any major injury will cost a player 2 seasons of FB (the spring season and then the fall season).

Absolutely poor leadership all around on this one.

Portland State football wasn't going to be able to practice until the county was at Phase 3 of Oregon's reopening plan anyway. Currently, the county is at Phase 1.

And the BSC season is done. I'm skeptical of a spring season happening, probably best if it didn't.

You mean working out?

JMU was working out since July 6 with only 1 positive asymtomatic. Was suppose to start 'practicing' today, but that has been put on hold.

No fall season in FCS. I’d be surprised if more G5’s decide the same. FBS and NFL are a toss up at this point.
