Alabama State fires Donald Hill-Eley after their 4th. straight loss to AAMU. He amassed a 21-22 record in 4+ seasons (he took over halfway through 2017). He also went 60-75 in 12 years at Morgan State. Hornet DC Travis Pearson will be the interim coach for rest of the season.

John Grass resigned at Jacksonville State immediately following their win over ACU. He went 72-26 in 7.75 seasons at Jax State, won 5 outright OVC titles, and reached the FCS Championship game in 2015. According to JSUSoutherner on AGS, special teams coach Maxwell Thurmond will be interim for the rest of the season.

Apparently he disagrees with the move to C-USA?

WIU Will Fire Jared Elliott

Posted: Sun Nov 14, 2021 7:34 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
Jared Elliott will be gone from Western Illinois at the end of the season. He went 8-25 in three seasons (with 1 game to go) after being promoted from within in 2018.

Southern Utah Fires Demario Warren

Posted: Mon Nov 15, 2021 4:25 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
I figured this was coming, especially after the 62-0 loss to Weber (SUU has a bye the final week). Warren went 21-42 in 6 seasons with the Thunderbirds. He won 9 games and a Big Sky title in 2017, but only won a total of 6 games after that.

Grambling Fires Broderick Fobbs

Posted: Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:47 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
Unlike the WIU case, this firing is immediate. Fobbs went 54-28 in 7 seasons with the Tigers, but he was just 15-17 over his last 3 seasons (Grambling didn't play in '20-21). Under Fobbs, Grambling won 2 SWAC titles (2016, 2017) and went 1-1 in the first two Celebration Bowls. Terrence Graves will be the interim coach for the Bayou Classic next week.

Residual of Ed Lamb talent on the roster. SUU steadily waned the further it got into Warren's tenure.

Paul Petrino Will Apparently Be Fired at Idaho

This isn't totally official yet, but also not surprising. Petrino is 33-66 (19-41 as FBS, 14-25 as FCS) at Idaho with 1 game to go, and he already holds the Vandal career mark for most losses. His only success came in 2014 when Idaho went 9-4 including a win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

Idaho State Fires Rob Phenicie

Posted: Sat Nov 20, 2021 3:36 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
Not sure why they announced this the morning of the final game (Phenicie is still coaching the final game, I believe). Phenicie is currently 16-34 with one game left. His only winning season came in 2018, but Idaho State is now in their 38th. straight season without a playoff appearance.

Abilene Christian Fires Adam Dorrel

by Mvemjsunpx
Dorrel went 19-32 in 5 seasons with the Wildcats. This was a big change from his 76-8 record at DII NW Missouri State.

That became VERY clear to Sac State women's basketball fans with the horrible tenure of Bunky Harkleroad, who had two NCAAT appearances at D-II Glenville State and had a decent tenure at NAIA D-II Berea College, but struggled mightily with the Hornets in D-I.

As SD says, D-I is a different animal, indeed....

Lafayette Fires John Garrett

Garrett went 15-33 in 5 seasons with the Leopards, never going any better than 4-8. Lafayette hasn't had a winning season since 2009 (despite winning the Patriot League in 2013).

Just looked up that 2013 Fordham team. 4-1 in-conference got them the auto-bid and a first round blowout against UNH. Interestingly enough, Fordham was listed as 12-2, 0-0 Patriot because they weren't allowed to claim the auto-bid because they had schollies. Were they transitioning to non-schollie?

The Patriot League was still officially a non-scholarship league back then, although I believe their "need-based aid" was rather generous.

Alabama State Hires Eddie Robinson, Jr.

Robinson, an ASU alum, played in the NFL for 11 years and has done a bit of analyst work. I don't think he's ever coached, though, at least not at the college or pro level.

Incidentally, Eddie Robinson, Jr., is NOT related to Grambling legend Eddie Robinson.

Maine's Nick Charlton Leaves

Charlton will reportedly be the OC at UConn under Jim Mora, Jr. He went 14-13 in 3 seasons with the Black Bears.

Jeff Voris Resigns at Butler

Posted: Tue Nov 30, 2021 5:26 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
Voris went 80-95 in 16 seasons at Butler. Voris won Pioneer titles 3 times ('09, '12, '13), won the Gridiron Classic in 2009, and led the Bulldogs to their only playoff appearance in 2013, but recent success has been harder to come by. Butler hasn't had a winning season since 2017, and they lost 14 straight PFL games before upsetting Marist in the season finale.

Jacksonville State Hires Rich Rodriguez

Posted: Tue Nov 30, 2021 5:31 pm
by Mvemjsunpx
"RichRod" coached Arizona for 5 years, Michigan for 3 years, West Virginia for 7 years (his greatest success), and also had a 7-year stint at DII Glenville State back in the '90s. His career record at all levels is 163-119-2.

New Hampshire's Sean McDonnell Retires

Posted: Wed Dec 01, 2021 7:55 am
by Mvemjsunpx
Sean McDonnell, whose head-coaching stint spawned Chip Kelly, retired after 22 seasons as UNH's head coach (not counting a 2019 season where he took a leave of absence because of bladder cancer). He went 157-104 in those 22 seasons, and he took the Wildcats to the playoffs in 14 straight seasons (2004-17)—a streak that was 2nd. all-time behind Montana's 16 straight appearances (1993-09). He went 14-14 in the I-AA/FCS playoffs, but his teams never appeared in a national championship game.

Kelley resigned "to pursue other interests." Presbyterian's administration must all have serious "WTF!?" looks on their faces right now.
