Re: Monmouth to CAA

Post by BDKJMU »

Also rumor Elon AND W&M could be going to the So-Con (as full
members). I would assume Richmond, football only in the CAA, would go as a football only member. That would get the So-Con to 12 for football (and leave the CAA at 10)..

Sweet! That frees up three slots for DelState, Howard, and Morgan State in HBCuAA.

Don’t forget Norfolk State..

The MEAC lost Hamtpon in 2018, and last year lost NC A&T, FAMU, and Bethune Cookman. Went from 10 football playing schools down to 6. 4 in the current CAA footprint, not including
NCCU (in Durham only 40 miles from Elon):
-Norfolk St
-Howard
-Morgan St
-Del St

There is a rumor that Virginia St&Kentucky St are thinking about joining the MEAC.I think these schools along with Virginia Union should have joined the MEAC already.

This is good for the soul.
And for the rhythm.
More rhythm headed the CAA’s way. NC A&T and Howard reportedly now targeted by the CAA.

Football wise, that will take the CAA from 12 to 14 teams (-JMU, + Monmouth, Hampton, and NC A&T). IF the CAA goes to 2 divisions, I imagine they’d keep UD and VU in the same division, put them in the south, Towson in the north. Otherwise, just swap Towson and UD. Play the other 6 teams in your division and 2 of the 7 in the other.

South
-UD
-VU
-UR
-W&M
-Hampton
-Elon
-NC A&T

North
-Towson
-Monmouth
-SBU
-Albany
-URI
-UNH
-Maine

FWIW NC A&T football won’t join the CAA until 2023, so if they did go to North/South divisions, won’t be next season, where it looks like will be 13 teams.

Bigger shitshow. Big Sky will be down to 12? members. If I’m seeing it right, were at 13 with SUU through last season (I see Idaho came down in 2018, and UND left). Were they ever at 14?

CAA will be 13 teams this season, 14 teams 2023.

NC A&T’s Truist Stadium, 21.5k. Will be biggest stadium in the CAA as of 2023. I thought it was called Aggie Stadium- I’ve driven by it a number of times in Greensboro. Well apparently it was.
1966-2018 Aggie Stadium
2019-2020 BB&T Stadium
2020-Current: Truist Stadium

Now will be 2 CAA stadiums with real grass- the 2 NC schools. Looks like would be a great FCS stadium if not for the stupid track.
Image
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truist_ ... ina_A%26T)

Hampton’s Armstrong Stadium, 12k. Although not much of a press box, again wouldn’t be too bad for an FCS stadium if not for the track.

Monmouth’s Kessler Stadium, 4.2k.

Are those pics legit? I've seen mid-range HS stadia better than Monmouth's. Consolidating the fans of both teams on one side of the field is bad news...especially if you're hosting your most bitter rivals. I can only imagine the fights that would break out if Sac fans had to share bleachers with Manure Pile fans. And it would probably be worse at a Griz-Scat game....

They’re legit. URI was the smallest CAA at about 6.6k. Obviously Monmouth could more than double their capacity with temp bleachers, but I don’t know if they ever use temp or if its necessary. Even though Monmouth has been pretty good the last few seasons, they’re private, and college football isn’t big in NJ or the northeast (outside of PA).

CAA football stadium capacities according to wiki.

7 most southern school: Avg about 13.7k (was higher with JMU’s 25k).
-NC A&T 21.5K
-UD 18.8k (was 23k)
-W&M 12.7k
-Hampton: 12k
-Elon: 11.3k
-Towson: 11.2k
-UR 8.2.k (private)

7 most northern schools: Avg about 9.3k
-VU: 12.5k (private)
-SBU: 12.3k
-UNH: 11k
-Maine: 10k
-Albany: 8.5k
-URI: 6.6k
-Monmouth: 4.2k (private)

That was what, 38 years ago? Big time college football in the Northeast is significantly less popular than it is in other parts of the country and the reasons are many: proliferation of so much more D2 and D3 schools to dilute the product, teams don't have the rich history and competitiveness of other schools, the winter sports (basketball and hockey) are more popular here than in other areas, so much more things to do than big time college football in the area, and it does get pretty cold on the latter half of the schedule. It would've been interesting to see how things would have fared if the Ivy League, 100 years ago, decided to keep playing football at a high level. They had been successful nationally and are certainly bellweathers in the Northeast. Having schools with such notoriety deciding that football wasn't important certainly carried that message into the region.

No. It the same with HS outside of PA (my brother was a HS assistant and later referee in CT).

There isn’t a single FCS in the northeast north of the Mason Dixon line that draws well over the course of the season. Sure you might have some schools draw well for homecoming or a rivalry game, but have piss poor attendance for all but 1 or 2 games.

2019 attendance rankings, the last season before the China Virus, the highest northeastern FCS was UNH at 10,164, only 20th highest for FCS (and they didn’t have an attendance avg killing home playoff game that season). They use a homecoming gimmick to boost their numbers by requiring everyone who enters the tailgate lots to have a $35 I think it was ticket (they’re like $15-20 fo the other games). So for their homecoming game they’ll draw a huge crowd on paper with a fraction in the stadium. Ex their JMU HC game last season listed 17,323. UNH with 2 non offensive TDs almost pulled a monster upset in a less than 1/2 full/5k at most in their 11k stadium.

Northern CAA, Patriot, Ivy, NEC : lawl.

While JMU’s huge band is of the top (non HBCU) FCS bands, this could be a reload for the CAA here.
