2022-23 Coaching Change Thread
Josh Conklin is out at Wofford. He technically resigned, but it sounds like that may not have been totally voluntary. Conklin finished his tenure with a 19-28 record. He won 17 games his first two seasons, but has only won two games since the pandemic started (Wofford has now lost 15 consecutive games). Shawn Watson, who was the head coach at SIU from 1994-96, is now the interim coach.

Pine Bluff Fires Doc Gamble
Gamble went 8-15 in less than 3 seasons. The Golden Lions under Gamble won the SWAC-West during the abbreviated Spring '21 season, but they've gone 4-14 since (1-14 against DI opponents). Pine Bluff OC and former Miami (OH) head coach Don Treadwell was be the interim for the rest of the season.

North Alabama Cans Chris Willis
Following an 0-7 start against DI competition and a loss to UCA in which they allowed 733 yards, North Alabama has fired head-coach Chris Willis. Willis finished his 6-year tenure with a 20-33 record, 15-28 since the Lions moved up in 2018. Ryan Held, the OC, will be the interim coach.

Charleston Southern Fires Autry Denson
The Buccaneers fired Denson after going 14-22 over four seasons. There will not be a (meaningful) interim coach because CSU doesn't play the final week.

Scott Wachenheim Resigns at VMI
Wachenheim only went 24-61 in 8 seasons at VMI, but he did lead them to a playoff appearance in Spring '21.

Lehigh Fires Tom Gilmore
Gilmore went just 9-27 in 4 seasons with the Mountain Hawks and his team averaged just 14 points-per-game during his tenure. Gilmore's career record is now 81-108 including his 14-year stint at Holy Cross.

Rob Ambrose Out at Towson
I'm surprised at this one after the Tigers won 4 straight to end the season. Ambrose, who led the team the national title game in 2013, finishes his 13-year tenure with a dead-even 76-76 record. He also led Towson to 2 CAA titles (2011, 2012) and 3 FCS playoff appearances (2011, 2013, 2018).

Northern Colorado Fires Ed McCaffrey
This had to happen even though I believe McCaffrey had at least a couple years left on his contract. This school gave Earnest Collins 9 seasons, so for McCaffrey to get canned after 2 seasons of actual games shows how dysfunctional his tenure really was.

Yes. He was the one responsible for the infamous clipboard incident last year.dal4018 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 5:37 pmWow wasn't his son MAX the OC under him???Mvemjsunpx wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 4:22 pm This had to happen even though I believe McCaffrey had at least a couple years left on his contract. The Citadel Fires Brent Thompson
Thompson went 36-44 in 7 seasons with the Bulldogs. They made the playoffs and got a seed in his first year in 2016, but they failed to break .500 at any point during the rest of his tenure.

Houston Christian's Vic Shealy Resigns
Vic Shealy, the only head coach the HCU/HBU program has ever known, has resigned after 10 seasons. It's been a struggle to build the Husky program, as evidenced by Shealy's 21-79 record and 10 losing seasons. The team's best mark was 5-7 in 2019.

David Bailiff Won't Return at Texas A&M-Commerce
This one hasn't been officially announced, yet, but—from what I'm reading—Bailiff and the school couldn't agree on a contract extension so he decided to walk. Bailiff went 23-13 in 3 seasons at Commerce (5-6 in his lone FCS season), and he has a 101-108 record overall including his stints at Texas State and Rice.

Dad HC, son OC, other son QB (that somehow made BSC honorable mention ) with son's g/f as FB admin. Yeah, everything was going to work out just fine.Mvemjsunpx wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 6:36 pmYes. He was the one responsible for the infamous clipboard incident last year.

I thought UNC deserved credit for making a splashy hire (what did they have to lose?), but I gotta give them even more credit for pulling the plug early. Maybe credit is the wrong word since its a self inflicted wound, but I figured they'd just let the remainder of the contract run its course. Things can't get much worse, right?

Re: Northern Colorado Fires Ed McCaffrey
I honestly don't think it could have gone much worse for them and that regime than it did, especially with everything outside of the games. When you have players saying "thank god" when their coach gets fired, that's never a good sign.SDHornet wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 5:39 amDad HC, son OC, other son QB (that somehow made BSC honorable mention ) with son's g/f as FB admin. They might not win many (any?) games next season, but for the culture and program, there's nowhere to go but up.

Delaware State Fires Rod Milstead
DSU fired Milstead after a 17-33 record over 5 seasons. The Hornets really blew a chance at their first winning season in 10 years when they were blown out at home by Morgan State in Week 11.

Bethune-Cookman Fires Terry Sims
Sims went 38-39 over 7 seasons (not counting 2020-21, when they didn't play). His record was 34-21 pre-pandemic, but back-to-back 2-9 seasons cost him his job.

Dayton's Rick Chamberlin Retires
Rick Chamberlin retired after going 104-48 in 14 seasons (again, not counting 2020-21 when they didn't play) as the Flyers' head coach. His teams won 3 (shared) Pioneer titles ('08, '09, '15) and had 1 playoff appearance ('15). Chamberlin was a member of the Dayton football program as a player, assistant coach, or head coach for every year from 1975-2022 minus only 1979.

Re: Bethune-Cookman Fires Terry Sims
They didn't announce an interim HC, and declared that there would be no further comment until a new permanent HC is announced. Who's supervising the players? They should be starting post-season workouts in a couple of weeks, and somebody's gonna have to supervise that....Mvemjsunpx wrote: ↑Tue Nov 29, 2022 5:23 pm Sims went 38-39 over 7 seasons (not counting 2020-21, when they didn't play). CCSU Fires Ryan McCarthy
A sudden trend is emerging of schools that didn't play in '20-21 firing their coaches. McCarthy went 11-2 and won the NEC in 2019, but his Blue Devils went 6-16 the last 2 seasons with some super ugly losses.
