HOUSTON — Keith Davis made a name for himself as a fearless, smashmouth safety at Sam Houston State. He was known for his vicious hits and play-making abilities.
As a senior on the Bearkats’ 2001 Southland Conference championship squad, Davis received All-America honors after leading the team in tackles with 96. He also broke up seven passes and forced three fumbles with his bone-crushing hits.
That reputation and style of play led to Davis signing with the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie free agent in 2002. After a fair share of ups and downs, highs and lows, Davis has settled into a backup role behind Roy Williams and has been a big contributor to the Cowboys on defense and special teams over the past several seasons.
Davis started all 16 regular season games in 2005 opposite Williams, who is also known for hard hits, and finished the season with 68 tackles and three pass deflections.
