Lions Drop Football Season Opener at New Mexico State
LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Chase Holbrook passed for 280 yards and four touchdowns and New Mexico State scored 28 unanswered points to take a 35-14 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the season opener for both teams Thursday at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
Derek Dubois caught a game-high seven passes while Brandon McKinney returned an interception 68 yards for a touchdown for NMSU (1-0). Southeastern, which forced four turnovers, fell to 0-1 on the season.
Holbrook, who finished 23-for-33 with three interceptions, threw touchdown passes of 28 and 13 yards to Chris Williams and found Brandon Allen on a 57-yard strike that gave NMSU a 35-7 lead in the third quarter.
Southeastern, which tied the game at 7-7 on Demerious Johnson's 30-yard interception return, was held to 62 yards total offense in the first half as Brian Babin was sacked four times. Babin, making his first career start for the Lions, finished 14-for-27 for 145 yards in the contest.
Dremell Adams, who scored the Lions' lone offensive touchdown on a 62-yard gallop with 2:01 remaining, finished with 73 yards for the Lions while Jay Lucas added 73 yards. Mario Gilbert caught five passes for the Lions while Lucas added three catches, including a 23-yard grab in the fourth quarter that put the ball at the NMSU 33.
Travis Williams and Tommy Conners recorded eight tackles each to lead Southeastern while Marquis Powell and Steven Honore added six stops. Eric Jackson, who finished with five tackles, picked off a pair of Holbrook passes while Tony Johnson recorded his first career interception after picking J.J. McDermott in the fourth.
