FCS vs. D2 champion annual game?

Post by GoWCUCatamounts »

What would you think about having a game (exhibition) before all the seasons start play with the defending Div 1-FCS champ vs. defending D2 champ? I mean look at some of these match-ups since 2000 that might have been....

FCS D2

Georgia Southern vs. Delta St
Montana vs. North Dakota
Western Kentucky vs. Grand Valley St.
Delware vs. Grand Valley St.
James Madison vs. Valdosta St
Appalachian St vs. Grand Valley St.
Appalachian St vs. Grand Valley St.
Appalachian St vs. Valdosta St
Richmond vs. Minnesota-Duluth

some of these are quality games that would have been great to see. ESPECIALLY App St vs. GVS. I say GVSU would dominate us FCS 3-1 against FCS champs. But thats just me. Post your opinions below :D

What would the FCS schools get out of this? D2 games don't count for playoffs.

He said exhibition game. Like a tune up game.

I don't think the NCAA would to allow it. The only upside would be press coverage for the teams, but I doubt any big media would include any more than a footnote about the game.

I'd rather see the FCS champ take on the FBS champ. A battle of DI schools, in a game that would count for something. I also don't think it helps FCS football to be linked with DII. I can't say enough how happy I am that FCS title game has finally moved into bowl season and away from the lower divisions.

BTW- App State would have destroyed GVSU. Being a big fish isn't so tough in DII, especially now that everything is regionalized and the fact that very few schools fund football fully.

FCS will never go for it. The division has enough problems with credibility let alone if the defending champ gets beat by a DII school. Plus all the seniors won't be eligible to play.

I don't see the point. Whether it's FCS vs. DII or FCS vs. FBS, all you'd be getting 95% of the time is a blowout.

There would be zero for FCS to get out of playing a game against the D2 champ. Some years may be some wide scores, but you're fooling yourself if you think most years there si a huge difference. Case in point: The only thime this has come close to happen is when defending FCS champ Youngstown played defending D-2 champ North Alabama, YSU won by a hefty 3 points if I remember correctly.

I kinda agree with you but you got to remember that YSU used to win every game by a hefty 3 points.

The gap is growing though, D2 football is a shadow of what it was even in the days of UNA. Top schools leave and the ones that are left behind don't step up and fill the gap left behind. I will say the gap will never be as wide as the top of the FBS and FCS but I think you'll see fewer and fewer close games between DII and FCS teams as time progresses. The team that won it their year, UM-Duluth, probably would struggle to compete with the crappy team NDSU put on the field last year.
