The Competiton

Post by CatMom »

As many in the FCS look down their noses on the SLC, I was just wondering who your school has to compete against for football talent.

I'll list who we compete against and Sly or other SLC school reps can add to it.
  • Texas
    Texas Tech
    Texas A & M
    SMU
    Rice
    Baylor
    TCU
    UNT
    Houston
    Oklahoma
    Oklahoma State
    Nebraska
    Iowa
    Arkansas
    Missouri
    UTEP
    LSU
That's just the FBS schools. Practically the whole of the Big XII.

I am trying to keep this to who, in the FBS, do you have to try and woo talent away from?

Thats like every school in a 500 mile radius. Also how often is Texas State recruiting against the bulk of those schools?

Iowa? Really? You compete against Iowa?

UNI usually goes after the same guys as

Iowa
Iowa St
Nebraska
Minnesota
Illinois
Wisconsin
Missouri
Wyoming
Kansas

Sometimes we get in the mix with Michigan, Indiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and what not....generally that is for one kid that would be a walk-on or a 2 star kid they are going after as a practice player.

Kinda what I was thinking too. If a kid has a chance to go play at Texas we probably ain't getting him. We compete on a regular basis (if it could be called that) with pretty much every school in the Western states.

We've had recruits that have had offers from us go to Iowa, yes. (And remember you can go 500 miles west and still be in Texas  )

I don't think we are so bad now but the road we've taken has been bad. For the longest time we not only had issues of reputation within the area of sports but Texas State was, until a few years ago, known as the party school. Any luck in sports was mainly that... a combination of luck, coaching and a batch of good or slightly overachieving athletes. Until Bailiff came along football was something a bunch of guys did on Saturdays to stay busy when there weren't classes. While academic standards were fairly high it didn't mean we attracted the student athletes we really needed and thus they went elsewhere.

Now we truly have those "fights" for the better athletes and scholar athletes (every football player recruited this year was in the top 10% of their class) and more of those athletes are looking our way. I owe it to the 2005 team. Susccess breeds success.

We are not App or UNI or Montana or JMU (not as arrogant either but that comes from winning) but we are working towards that. Teams have to start somewhere and build from it. I don't see TXST falling back into the mediocrity that was the years between 1984 & 2005. We may not win the SLC every year but we'll be in the mix.

I do agree that for most part the SLC is not a great conference (thank you Louisiana) as far a parity goes. We have McNeese, who is not the team it once was. UCA is gonna make noise when they are playoff eligible. SAM needs new coaching (and other things.)

There's this conviction amongst TX FBS schools that players/students go to TXST because they didn't have the grades to get into UT. That is totally false and while it may have been somewhat true at one time, it hasn't been for the past decade. We have the 3rd highest academic requirements in TX (behind UT & A&M) and it is now a University of choice but changing that mindset is slow in coming.

Hopefully, in a few more years, TXST won't be the brunt of so many FCS jokes, even if the conference is.
Now I'll get off my soapbox and back to the topic. Anyone can say they have to compete with every other college or university in the country... that's a given. We have had guys from many other states too, that chose us or transferred in their soph year. I'm looking for the most obvious and direct competition. So ours is the Big XII, CUSA and SAM.

We're starting to get looks and I see us battling for the title again this year (barring catastrophe). I am also of the concept we need to establish ourselves on the winning side before considering going FBS, but I have no control over that one.

Ok, enough...... I need to go take something to relax me. I get all wound up talking about this stuff because I can write what I really would like to discuss and I think I've done enough damage (and confused everyone) for one post. :)

Catmom, the in-state "competition" is something you'll always have....even if Texas State goes FBS...UT and A&M will always look at your school as the place that students/athlete who "can't get into us" go...

My son is a Ball State grad...he had friends who openly admitted they wanted to go to Indiana or Purdue...but went to Ball State for a specific major...they still wore their Indiana or Purdue stuff and rooted for that team, not Ball State (except this past season when they won some)...

UMass competes for talent against every DI school from Florida to Maine...we have made some good inroads in Florida, Maryland and Louisiana...we even have players from California...

Totally agree with your points of fact and assessment. I think what I was trying to get at gets all mixed up in my head and I can't quite bring it out. But I am open to all opinions and POV from everyone. Let me think about something here and post later.

Thanks for the input all and please do add to this if you are so inclined.

Not every one of our recruits to Portland State follow a specific mold as to what other schools are looking at them, but generally when we look at a strong recruit, they are also looking at Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Boise State and Montana. There may be other schools involved but as I looked at the list of potential recruits, especially those from high school this year, these were the ones mentioned most often.

Sac State tries to recruit locally, unfortunately some of the best football talent in the country is here and are sought after by schools nationally. Arguably the best football talent in the country resides in Texas and California, so it would be unfair to just list a few schools that a California or Texas school competes with.

The biggest competition comes from the WAC and Pac 10, usually a WAC or Pac 10 flunky will transfer after a season in one of those conferences though.

The BSC also competes for many of the same players as Sac State, it always sucks to see a local kid playing for a BSC school other than the Hornets.

If you recruit in Louisiana you will compete against LSU, they really try to lock down as much talent as they can. On a smaller scale, Southern competes with ULL, since we have a lot of students/alumni from their area.

Thats just it. Everybody knows the majority of the talent is from Texas and Florida. So just about every school tries to recruit from here. Texas St is against just about every FBS school.

Usually if they're outside of Montana....

Washington State
Idaho
Boise State
Oregon State
Fresno State
San Jose State

Hawaii - we used to take quite a few recruits from them but not as much anymore.

You're misreading this. The point is we don't get the same level talent because of who we have to recruit against. We don't get those top tier players. Although I won't say our guys are slackers. I also stated (somewhere on here) that we are just now (after years of mediocrity) starting to build on the success of 2005 and after 2008 we will get more interest from more 4 & 5 stars.

Oh and...............
We have yet to become so arrogant as to keep reminding teams that we beat them the last time we played. I could get that way but it's just not my style.

hmmm....maybe I could change my stance on that...must think about :D
