Is This Southern Illinois' Year?

SIU is having another fine year, with some really good wins. Question is:
Could this be the year the Saluki's take the title? Do they have enough in the tank to pull it off, or are there too many potential stumbling blocks to prevent it?

Too soon to tell. We still have a lot to work on even though we are blowing some bad teams away. SIU has a lot of young players who are still learning. We will have better idea of where we are at after playing Youngstown and UNI the next two weeks.

After YSU beats you this week, we can lock this topic..
Just Kidding. SIU is a great team and I think this is the year the GFC wins it all!

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. Count on a little Southern Illinois hospitality this weekend.
SIU has improved in a couple of areas this year. They have a more balanced attack (translation: we now have a passing attack) and force a lot more turnovers this year than last. We had several question marks coming into the season. Most of them have been answered, although I am still a bit shaky about our freshman kicker. He is not as consistent as I would like. He hit a 40 yard FG last week and turned around later and missed a 25 yard chip shot. Our depth has definitely improved.

There is little doubt that the 2007 champ will come out of the SoCon once again.
Southern Illinois will choke out.

How much doubt there is probably depends on where you live.

Unless SIU is a dramatically more talented team, in several areas, than they were at the end of last year, I don't see them getting anywhere near Chattanooga. They were downright manhandled by the Griz in last years playoffs.

I see them as a p;ayoff contender but I don't think they will take it all but I will have a final decision after the youngstown state game. I think alot of there post season rides on that.

The Salukis are quicker, deeper, and have a better passing game this year. Their defense has become more opportunistic, forcing more takeaways already this year than they had all of last season combined. I think this is a more dangerous team than what you saw in Montana in the second round last year.

Maybe it is the Year of the Dawg. The Salukis made a big step yesterday. If they can break the jinx of the Dome, they could be well on their way. The last time the Salukis won @ Northern Iowa was in 1983 and they ended up with a National Championship that year. Now I am really looking forward to Saturday.
