ODU Wants Top 25 Team Next Year.

Being discussed on the 'zone but thought it'd be appropriate here too. Wilder wants to prep the guys for the CAA in two years, and what better way to do it than bringin' in another top team next year? We've already got W&M (who I think will be even better in 2010/11) comin' in, so what other ranked team do you think the Monarchs should invite to Foreman Field? I personally wanna see Appalachian State or Liberty (who we seem to be seein' more of in other sports), but I wouldn't mind JMU either.

And no, Alabama doesn't count as a Top 25 team in this scenario.

Bring in another "ranked" CAA team, there should be a couple to chose from at the end of the season. JMU, Nova, UR, UMass, etc... Personally, I'd like to see you guys play some in state teams, thus JMU or UR.

Besides the ones you already mentioned how about

Hampton University (start a cross water rivalry!)
University of Richmond
Furman
Elon

Interesting but I don't think it will happen. ASU has five away games next year (includes a game at Florida) and will be looking for six home games. Four are already taken by SoCon opponents leaving two home dates to fill. Maybe we can get ODU down to Boone. :thumb:

I'd like to see them play Townson State Normal College of Maryland as well  :coffee: :thumb:

He said a top 25 team, not a top 125 team...

Interesting... UF looses Tebow and their powerhouse D... you guys lose AE... could be good.

Yeah, those are the two bright spots in the whole thing. I'm still not holding my breath. Should be a nice check though.

The article does say that Wilder will do a home-and-home series, but it's gotta start at Foreman. However, I'm sure we'll be seein' you guys soon enough.

Maybe (they're not Top 25 though). However, I think read somewhere that Norfolk State and ODU are lookin' to start a yearly thing in ~3 years. I'm sure it'll be great for some NSU alum to return to Foreman after watchin' the Spartans play there years ago.

This is probably the most plausible scenario, and it does prepare us well for CAA play.

That's awfully bold for a program with less than half a year of football played. Good luck with that. :thumb:

It wasn't too long ago that Hampton was a consistent top 25...and I think they'll be back atop the MEAC sooner than later. A better team than NSU any way you look at it though, IMO

OH, my mistake. I thought I saw a 1 there.

Last year another ASU fan told us that we were dreaming by build the stadium to nearly 20K seats (he didn't realize it was a renovation). He also said "Good luck with that."

You never know what will come to pass.

That's true.

It will be interesting to see if ODU can keep things going. However, I can pretty much assure you that ASU will not travel first to a start up football program. Heck, we even got Montana to travel to Boone before the return trip to Missoula.

Ah, I initially thought it meant ODU wanted to be a ranked Top 25 team next year.

Playing a Top 25 team makes more sense, but is it really a good idea to schedule an in-state CAA school? You will soon be playing us in conference and would a multi-touchdown loss to JMU or Richmond be something to keep up the enthusiasm of your fanbase? W&M will be a cold slap of reality and I can't believe that adding in another of us will be a good idea. If say the team is Liberty or Elon, go right ahead and schedule. But I have to question the wisdom in scheduling another in-state conference school in your second year of existence.

The one thing we don't have to worry about is whether someone travels well to our stadium. You'll get no more than 1000 tickets. If you don't purchase them all, then we will get them back and sell them.

One thing about our second year. We will have nearly the exact same team on the field. The only difference being the one senior that we have (D-lineman) and anyone that beats out the players from this year. There will be plenty of experience to play these games. The question is, do we have enough talent to go with the experience? We might as well start to figure that out in year 2 rather than in year 3.

Wait until the end of the season before you start evaluating your team's chances next year.

ODU currently has a distinct advantage against the teams it plays - the other teams have ZERO film to watch. That advantage will get less and less as the season goes on.

Not going to be UR for next year I think. We have our 3 OOC games scheduled, @UVA and home versus Elon and Coastal Carolina at the new Robins Stadium. Add in the 8 CAA games and our dance card is full.

A lot of fans here at SDSU are worried that Nebraska might buy us out next year :? (which I doubt) which would give us a hole to fill, in which case I would think if we got some cash out of the deal we would go and play you guys, or have you make the journey out to brookings.

Wanting, and getting, are very different...

I've said many time that ODU is doing it right in starting up their team...

If a home and home MUST start at their stadium...I think their administration has made it's first major mistake... :coffee:

Hold the phone, guys. Here is a quote form the article:
(ODU Head Coach Bobby) Wilder said he'd consider a one-shot-deal game or a home-and-away package.
We know we are the new boys in town and as such we have no clout to speak of. There's no harm in wanting a home and away to start at Foreman Field, but as everybody know, you can't always get what you want (us older guys can start humming the tune now!). What we're after is the experience and an opportunity to depart from the Hostess League.

Just wait for CAA South games to kick in, you'll get your wish in spades.

That is certainly true, but we will also have more time to put in more of the offense and additional defensive schemes. Many of our O and D linemen have only been with us since August. QB since January.

I don't think JMU will be looking for ODU, they are still looking for a 1-A school to fill their schedule due to monatary reasons. It's not that JMU would not play ODU (we will in a few years), it's just money at this point. that's my 2 cents.
