UMass @ Richmond

Post by Col Hogan »

Which team will travel from Amherst to Richmond this week???

Two weeks ago, the Minutemen were hapless for three quarters against the krptonite that is the Blue Hens...
As the University of Massachusetts football team walked off the field at Delaware Stadium Oct. 10, the Minutemen looked like roadkill.

After a strong start to the season, UMass looked like it had been exposed as a pretender in the Colonial Athletic Association chase after a 43-27 loss to the Blue Hens
Last week, the Wildcats played the part of our Lois Lane...bending over to entertain the homecoming crowd at Alumni Stadium...
The defense, which looked flawed against Delaware, carried the Minutemen Saturday. It had two interceptions and seven tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

In the fourth quarter with UMass clinging to a lead, the defense forced the Wildcats into back-to-back three-and-outs.
UMass coach Kevin Morris gets credit too and not just for successfully preparing his team for a big game. He chose not to dress the four players who were arrested on a drug charge earlier this month, even though the athletic department's policy required just a one-game suspension which was served at Delaware.

The four - including defensive back Shane Viveiros who started three games at strong safety - might have helped bolster a defense that was battling injuries, but Morris chose to make a statement about what was important.

So...the question is...which team shows up at Richmond???

I'll take the easy way out and say, somewhere in between the team that played at Delaware and the one that hosted UNH.

My guess is that this is another one of those games where Richmond allows the opponent to stay close and then does enough to win at the end. Richmond 28ish, UMass 21ish.

Methinks those bloody spiders are toying with us all this regular season.

You very well could be correct...

I'd like to look at the Delaware game as a massive wake-up call to a team that thought it was good enough to simply show up and win...

UMass 24 Richmond 21

UMass loses this game....and still makes the playoffs, since I think they run the table after Richmond. They basically saved their season by winning one of the three---UNH, UD, UR. Their other 7 games are walkovers.

Good news on the injury front...two top performers will be back for this game...
Running back Tony Nelson and safety Jeromy Miles, both seniors, missed most of Saturday's 23-17 win over No. 4-ranked New Hampshire. Bothered by tightness in his thigh, Nelson carried twice for two yards in the first quarter, then left and did not return.

Miles was hit in the helmet in the first half. He did not play after halftime.

"Both should be good to go Saturday,'' coach Kevin Morris said Monday.

Game notes for the upcoming game have been posted...

Here are the UMass notes: http://www.umassathletics.com/sports/m- ... 09aaa.html

The UMass athletic department writes a lot more than Richmond...

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Richmond wins 26-23 in OT. And if I wasn't going to be at Elon for Homecoming this Saturday, I would hop on GRTC and get to UR Stadium in a heartbeat.

If I was voting on polls...assuming everyone else was idle, I'd probably put Richmond at #6. Obviously, not every team is idle, but that's a base position on where I put them and they could rise or fall a couple of spots depending on how the teams around that position do.

At the begining of the season, the running game was one place UMass didn't have a worry...Tony Nelson had a great junior season, and in pre-season and the first two games looked to be returning to last years form...

But he was injured...nothing serious...then injured again...and we fans wondered how that hole would be filled...

In stepped RS sophmore Jonathan Hernandez, a speedy back who Coach Morris says will see plenty of playing time despite the fact that Nelson is back from his injuries this week against Richmond...
“Absolutely. It makes us a better football team,” Morris said as 14th-ranked UMass prepared to play Saturday at No. 1-ranked Richmond, the defending Football Championship Subdivision champion.

“Jonathan has proven his worth. He will certainly be part of the mix,” Morris said.

Nelson welcomes the assistance.

“We room together in the hotel before every game. I help him, and he helps me,” Nelson said.

“Jonathan is a great talent. You always want to have two solid backs, so you can rotate them.”

Hernandez ran for 166 yards against UNH in last weeks win...and was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week...

I would love to see UR close out its football playing days at the old UR Stadium by winning its last three home football games against UMass, 'Nova, and W&M  UR has been playing football in this old facility since 1929. It will be nice to be in a new on campus facility next fall, 2010

Just got a call from our reporter on the scene....Col Hogan reports it's raining, and UMass just kicked a field goal to make it 3-0 with about 11 minutes left in the first quarter.

This is sort of a play-in game for UMass with the soft schedule they have left. Win here and a 2 or 3 loss season is almost guaranteed. Lose and they have to win out and keep there fingers crossed on selection day.

Exactly. They saved their playoff hopes by beating New Hampshire. Even with a loss here, I think UMass gets in @ 8-3.

And I would have no problem with that, so long as any fellow CAA teams that finish 8-3 and oh, beat UMass 43-27 head-to-head, also get in.

Which implies you either beat Navy or Villanover. :coffee:

And also implies we don't stumble to the Mickey mice or a bipolar Hofstra squad rolling off a bye week.
