Two days after completing a 5-26 season that tied the school record for losses, Wagner College fired head basketball coach Mike Deane after seven seasons with the school.

The announcement came late yesterday afternoon following a meeting athletic director Walt Hameline held with Deane at Spiro Sports Center.

The veteran head coach ends his tenure at Wagner with a 94-114 overall record, and a 60-66 record in the Northeast Conference, and without a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

“It was a difficult decision,” Hameline said of releasing Deane, a friend of 30 years. “Mike’s a quality person and a good coach, and I admire him for the competiveness and passion he brought to the game. But at the end of the day we only had two winning seasons in his years here. I thought it was time to go in a different direction.”

Hameline said a search would begin immediately for Deane's successor.

If Danny Hurley, St. Benedicts Prep and son of Bob Hurley, is interested we should give him serious consideration. He would bring the local recruiting edge the we sorely miss.

Hameline: Plenty of interest in Wagner's head coaching job

It’s a seller’s market for Wagner College in its search for a new men’s head basketball coach.

It always is.

“I’ve gotten more calls in the last few hours than I can ever remember getting,” said athletic director Walt Hameline, who has been through this process three times in the last 21 years. “I’ve heard from coaches with pro backgrounds to high school coaches.”

Through the years, Hameline has conducted the searches that brought Tim Capstraw, Dereck Whittenburg and Mike Deane to Wagner.

But this time, he says, is different.

“Agents, coaches, friends, companies that want to organize the search for you,” he said. “You name it I’ve had calls from them.”

Hameline says that despite all the activity, he has yet to actually speak to anyone about the opening.

“It will take some time,” he said. “We’re not rushing.”

In the meantime, candidate names are surfacing, some with a familiar ring.

Hurley's and St. Benedicts are a basketball machine and would do wonders for any mid-major program.
