Let me preface by saying I don't really care for college hoops, but...

UD 75 - ODU 67

:D

That's a big win, right? I'm not being facetious. I really don't know.

This is the first-ever home tournament hosted by the Black & Gold in Siegel Center's 11-year history

- Three of the four tournament teams have made NCAA Tournament appearances in the past two years. Cornell and Wofford in 2010 and VCU in 2009.

- Wofford is the only one of the four teams entering the two-day classic on a winning note after defeating High Point on Dec. 18th.

- VCU's schedule has tested the Rams with Wofford being the fifth 2010 NCAA Tournament participant on the docket. If the Black & Gold take on Cornell, it would be six of the first 12 opponents who made runs to the "Big Dance."

- The Rams will be looking to avoid the Christmas Hangover for the third straight year. VCU is just 4-6 in games following the holiday break, but have won the last two such outings, including last year's 82-74 home win over East Carolina.

Rams defeat Wofford; Face New Hampshire

Post by EPJr »

After a monumental collapse on the road against UAB earlier this month, VCU looked to right the ship against Wofford College Wednesday night at the Stu. The match up was the 2nd game of the day as part of the Richmond Marriot Holiday on the Hardwood Tournament.

Wofford is coming off a win against High Point University but the Rams weren’t about to let them get a win at the Stu defeating the Terriers in a tight one, 75 to 66.

Senior Brandon Rozzell led the Rams with 18 points, shooting 8-19 on the night half of those being 3′s. Junior Bradford Burgess chipped in 13 points on the night along with 4 rebounds.
ImageThe 2nd half saw some better shooting from the Rams from the behind the arc. After going just 38 % in the first half the Rams bested that in the 2nd, shooting 51%.

Rebounding was also a factor for the Rams in tonight’s match up. Rams were out rebounded by the Terriers, 32-26.

Noah Dalhman and Jamar Diggs led the Terriers in points with 13 on the night but the Rams led the Terriers in field goals shooting 48% to Woffard’s 46%.

The win moved VCU’s overall record to 8-4 and will face New Hampshire tomorrow at the Segiel Center for the 2nd half of the Marriot Tournament.

Rams knock off New Hampshire; claim tournament title

Post by EPJr »

With VCU defeating Wofford and New Hampshire beating Cornell, the championship match up for the first ever Holiday on the Hardwood Tournament was set.

The Wildcats of New Hampshire, out of the American East conference, entered the tournament with a statement to make after losing their two prior match ups against Army and Rhode Island.
Image
The Rams wouldn’t help out the Wildcats’ cause as they looked to start a winning streak of their own as they handled New Hampshire 78-65, winning the tournament on their home court

No. 10 Mizzou Downs Old Dominion, 81-58

Post by EPJr »

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Marcus Denmon matched his season best with five 3-pointers and scored 22 points, helping No. 10 Missouri to a surprisingly decisive 81-58 victory over Old Dominion on Thursday night.

Reserve Michael Dixon added 18 points and four assists and Matt Pressey had 15 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Tigers (13-1).

Missouri has won eight in a row for its first unbeaten December since 1991-92. The Tigers won their 56th in a row at home against non-conference opponents and made it look easy against the Colonial Athletic Association's preseason favorite (9-3), which entered 12th in the RPI off a strong early schedule that included a three-point loss to Georgetown in the opener.

Missouri led 37-29 at the half behind 14 points from Denmon and pulled away with 11-2 and 12-2 runs in the second half, ending Old Dominion's four-game winning streak.
Image
Poor free throw shooting didn't hold the Tigers back. They were only 14 for 22 with three players missing a pair.

Missouri was 9-for-19 overall from 3-point range, which Denmon going 5-for-8 and Dixon 3-for-3.

Frank Hassel had 11 points and reserve Marquel De Lancey added 10 for Old Dominion, which committed a season-high 21 turnovers. The Monarchs outrebounded their 13th straight opponent to open the season with a slim 33-32 advantage, but were limited to nine rebounds after entering with an average of 17 per game

VCU/ODU: The Rivalry Is Just Different

Old Dominion and VCU rejoined the battle today in Norfolk at 4:00pm, typically with a shot at first place in the conference on the line.

New fans may not fully understand the depth and length of the rivalry, which spans more than 30 years, two conferences and 82 games. VCU leads the series 42-40. The teams have split six CAA tournament games and knocked each other out of the past two CAA tournaments.

It’s a bizarre association that extends off the playing floor and into the coaching ranks. Eddie Webb was an assistant at VCU for 10 seasons. His father is Paul Webb, who won 196 games at Old Dominion. Jeff Capel ushered in a basketball revival at VCU. The younger Capel was an assistant on the ODU bench prior to landing the VCU job, and his father coached ODU to its 1995 NCAA tournament victory over Villanova.

It’s different when these two get together. Even former players understand that when these two teams get together, it’s different. “It was always a knock-down drag-out,” recalls Rodney Ashby, who played at VCU in the early 1990s. “We knew as players our fans took ODU, by far and away, more seriously than Richmond. The fans are a huge part of it. They just do not get along. At all. You see the venom that our fans and boosters have for ODU and it translates to the team and how you play.”

RAMS HOME GAME WITH ODU SELECTED AS ESPN WILDCARD GAME; TIP TIME SET FOR 2 P.M.

RICHMOND, Va. – Apparently the crew at the "Worldwide Leader in Sports" saw what everyone else already knew about the best college basketball rivalry in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Just two days after yet another hard-fought battle between VCU and Old Dominion, ESPN announced it will pick up the two schools rematch on Feb. 12th at the Verizon Wireless Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

"Any rivalry that goes back-and-forth as much as this one does is great for everybody involved. I'm just happy that the whole country will get to see what these two programs have to offer," Head Coach Shaka Smart said.

The Rams are fresh off a 59-50 defeat of the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon in Norfolk and will be looking for the series' first sweep since 2004, when VCU went a perfect 3-0, including an 84-67 victory in the CAA Tournament.

With the announcement, the Black & Gold will now play five games on the ESPN family of networks with a possibility depending on ESPNU Bracketbusters in late February and the CAA Championship game in March.

ESPN will announce the specific network (ESPN or ESPN2) on Feb. 4th.

Colonial Athletic Association Pep Band Jam

Post by EPJr »

The CAA and Doc Nix have organized the conference's first ever Pep Band Jam, running in conjunction with the upcoming CAA tourney in Richmond. The initial event will feature the bands of Mason, JMU, VCU and Old Dominion, but he hopes to make it a 12-team party in the future.

"All 12 of us rocking together at the same time, a show like no other!" he described. "All the collaboration and cooperation infused with the individual creativity of each group, and, of course, the competitive spirit that brought us all together. Not a battle or competition, but a showcase for all of our talented, hard-working groups."

This year's event is a week from Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Richmond Convention Center.

A big stunner in the women's tourney. #7 Delaware beats #2 ODU 72-55, handing ODU its first ever quarterfinal loss (previously 18-0).

SUCK IT ODU!!!

It's sad how much our ladies have fallen, but I'm glad this senior team is gone. I've never said this on CAAZone or MonarchNation ('cause our ladies read it), but having known all the current seniors on the Lady Monarchs personally, they never got along with each other and it translated on the court. They're all good people, but they fought so f***ing much with each other it was ridiculous. They even got into a verbal brawl with each other during the NCAA tournament at the Ted last season when JMU-Temple were playing and the only reason it didn't erupt was 'cause the student manager calmed them down and convinced two of them to leave. Thankfully we were all sitting in the upper corners of the Ted and I don't think anyone who could recognize them was nearby. Girls can be so dramatic.

Anyways, congrats!

Thanks, but I really don't give a rat's hind quarters about basketball (men's, women's, pro, college, whatev). I just saw a big headline and figured I'd rub it in. :D

EDIT: Just saw that they won again today, taking down UNCW 62-47. UD vs JMU for all the marbles tomorrow at 1pm on CSN. I wonder if a #7 seed has ever won the CAA tourney?

No, 'cause ODU's never been the #7 seed. :thumb:

East Carolina won the 1993 mens' tournament by upsetting #2 ODU, #6 UNC-W and then #1 JMU. The horseshoe was then removed from their posterior.
