Good read on the shaky mentality of the nova program since 2009. No mention of that 1939 NCAA appearance so apparently people are just focused on recent history.

I'm not sure if you're stating this because you're proud of the stat or what...vutomcat wrote:Interesting stat:

Of the 10 Big East teams to reach the tournament the past two years, only one — Xavier, which lost to Arizona in the round of 16 last season — advanced to the second weekend. Five were upset by lower-seeded opponents. Four lost their first game. Overall, the Big East has gone 7-10 in the NCAA tournament since the overhaul.
The primary culprit has been Villanova, which has romped through three consecutive seasons and earned a 2 seed, a 1 seed and, this year, another 2 seed in the tournament. The Wildcats, who made the Final Four under Coach Jay Wright in 2009, have been branded as underachievers for losing in the round of 32 the previous two seasons.
It's a fair article. Also, points out how well the Big East has done in out of conference games and it's really not fair to draw any conclusions on the random tournament results since its only two years.
Time will tell if it will remain a power conference.

Clever you. But, a 10 team conference with 5 tournament teams IS a power conference.

Re: THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE
They only give out hardware in March, so this is the only tournament that matters. Other poster was right, it's about regaining that position, not remaining there. Right now the Big East is a shell of what it was and they would need to prove it to be different by doing something of note in March. Opportunities are there to make noise - Providence and Butler could upset #1 seeds in the second round, Seton Hall gets to avoid one of the top 8 seeds until at least the Sweet 16, and nova and Xavier have seeds that all but assure at least one win if not two (hence why nova's stumble last year in the second round was so noteworthy). Now just go out there and do it.vutomcat wrote:bandl wrote:Without NCAA tournament success, Big East is neither beauty nor beast

Re: THE BIG EAST CONFERENCE
So you're on board with calling the A-10 a power conference on the basis of them getting 6 teams into the tournament out of 13 in 2014's tournament? Even got a team to the Elite 8 that year, that's like rarefied air for the new Big East.vutomcat wrote:89Hen wrote: FIFY

They didn't have any high seeds and this was a record for that conference. You could argue for that one season they were close to being a power conference.GannonFan wrote:So you're on board with calling the A-10 a power conference on the basis of them getting 6 teams into the tournament out of 13 in 2014's tournament? Even more so, other than Wichita no G5 at large got in. I am not counting Big East and A 10 as they are considered power conferences in hoops. Monmouth, San Diego St., St Mary 's, Valpo, all got screwed for a mediocre Syracuse, Oregon St , Texas Tech and Pitt.
This blasphemous post is on the "FCS in the Big Dance" thread.

NCAA Tournament history[edit]
Villanova has appeared in 35 NCAA Tournaments, beginning with the first in 1939. The Wildcats have amassed a Tournament record of 51–35 (.593), and were the National Champions in 1985. Villanova has won as the underdog (based on Tournament seeding) 15 times, more than any other program.[13] Villanova is one of only two programs (the other being Ohio State) that has played in the NCAA Tournament in every decade since the 1930s.
This is from Wikipedia under Villanova but I knew it from past years. They usually bring it up on the broadcasts during the tournament.

Your point was poorly made 89. Mine was referencing a Big East basketball team on a Big East thread and had everything to do with NCAA tournament success. That's on point.
Your point was that it didn't belong and has nothing to do with the thread. Incorrect.
