WBB - Idaho Fires(?) Jon Newlee

Definitely the most surprising coaching change thus far in this offseason. The official story is that they "mutually parted ways," but apparent insiders on the Vandal message board are saying it was a firing. Nobody is in the portal from Idaho right now (kind of unusual for Vandal WBB, I believe), so that can't be the reason.

Jon Newlee went 257-213 in 15 seasons as Idaho's head coach. He won 2 regular-season conference titles (1 WAC, 1 Big Sky) and 3 conference-tournament titles (2 WAC, 1 Big Sky) during his Vandal tenure, giving him 3 regular-season titles and 4 tournament titles when you add in his 6-year stint at Idaho State. Newlee's overall head-coaching record is 350-295.

The idea of the firing may not be surprising, but could the timing (it seems like it's way after the season) be an issue? Or is the gap between now and fall camp big enough to mitigate that?

I think it's early enough that the timing won't be an issue (the other two Big Sky jobs haven't been filled yet, for example). Newlee still had two years on his contract, though, so it wasn't a simple non-renewal firing. I guess there could be a scandal about to break or something.

I'm sure the Bobcats are aware that Mick Durham is back coaching again. He had a good year over at MSU-Billings.

Interesting. Sprinkle invited Durham to fly on the team charter to NC, then Durham retires the next week.

Bobcats may have someone already in mind.

How do you think he'll do with the Zags? Saw him penciled into the starting lineup, but I've never seen him play so complete unknown to me other than his resume (which looks good).

My Zags friend thinks he’s a 6. He’s a great shooter and at a long 6’7” with a high release he’s a tough matchup.

Thanks. But what's a "6"? Don't think I've heard that terminology before. Do you mean first guy off the bench?

Yes. Sorry. I was mixing my metaphors. Technically a 2 (shooting guard) but 6th man in the starting lineup.

Happy to see we went with another assistant with D1 experience in a "big" conference. We'll see how this pans out. I'm not too concerns so long as the program continues to get the support it needs to be successful.
