VCU makes a statement against Towson

The Rams came out pulling the trigger from the behind the arc with three 3 pointers alone from Sophomore Bradford Burgess who dropped 22 points in 14 minutes as the Rams beat up on the Towson Tigers, 112 – 53.

The Rams bench almost beat the Tigers alone adding 50 points while the Rams connected on twenty 3 pointers. This match up also saw the return of Jay Gavin to the court where he hit some late 3 pointers

Old Dominion Cruises Past Georgia State For Eighth Straight Win

NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Gerald Lee led three Monarchs in double-figures with 16 points and sophomore Kent Bazemore swiped a career-high six steals as Old Dominion breezed past Colonial Athletic Association foe Georgia State Thursday evening, 56-40.

Old Dominion (17-5, 9-1 CAA) has now won 19 straight home games, which is the sixth longest home winning streak in the country. The Monarchs have also won eight consecutive contests overall.

Joining Lee in double-figures were junior Ben Finney, who tallied 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and classmate Frank Hassell, who posted 10 points and seven rebounds.

ODU's defense, which entered the game third nationally in points allowed per game (55.5), held its ninth opponent to under 50 points and third to 40 or less. The 40 points scored by the Panthers is their lowest total since a 46-38 loss to Utah on Nov. 17, 2003.

Georgia State (9-13, 3-7) shot 35.4 percent for the game, the sixth consecutive opponent to shoot 36 percent or lower against ODU. The Monarchs also dominated the boards, out-rebounding GSU, 40-23.

UNCW just fired their head coach Benny Moss. They had lost 92-53 at Hofstra last night and it was obvious he wasn't working, as he took UNCW from CAA Champs and #9 seed in the NCAA Tourney to the CAA cellar.

Bit surprised they did it on Homecoming Week though.

Mason's Basketball Team Ties School Record In 70-68 Win


The George Mason men's basketball team tied a school record by winning its 17th-straight home game against a Colonial Athletic Association opponent, beating James Madison, 70-68 in front of 7,813 fans at Patriot Center. For Mason, it was its seventh-straight win overall and the seventh straight at home against James Madison. The win, coupled with Old Dominion's loss at Northeastern, left the Patriots all alone in first place in the CAA.

ESPN announced today that George Mason, Northeastern, Old Dominion, VCU and William & Mary have been chosen for televised games in BracketBusters, which will be played February 19-20, 2010.

On Friday night, ODU will travel to #22 Northern Iowa (19-2) for a 7 p.m. game on ESPN2,

W&M visits Iona (16-6) for a 9 p.m. contest on ESPNU.

On Saturday, Northeastern Vs. Louisiana Tech (18-3) for a 1 p.m. game on ESPN2. At 4 p.m.,

VCU hosts Akron (15-6) for a 4 p.m. clash on ESPNU. At 8 p.m.,

George Mason hosts College of Charleston (14-8) on ESPN2.

It's the second year in a row and third time in the last four years that five CAA teams have been chosen for televised contests. Six BracketBusters games will air on ESPN2 and five will be shown on ESPNU.

The CAA has been extremely successful in BracketBusters, posting an 11-5 record in televised games over the past five years. A pool of 98 teams from 14 different conferences are involved with the event.

The pairings for CAA teams that are not involved in televised BracketBusters games were also released this afternoon:

VCU’s junior guard, Joey Rodriguez is currently tied for 5th in the nation for assists. Rodriguez has stepped up wonderfully in replacing VCU great, Eric Maynor at the point guard position.

Rodriguez is averaging 11.3 points per game as well as 2.4 rebounds and 6.3 assists. He recently received the CAA honor of Player of the Week this past month

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Drexel freshman Chris Fouch scored 28 points as the Dragons routed Towson, 97-55, in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons recorded their second highest scoring total ever under Bruiser Flint as they cruised to their biggest victory of the season and improved to 8-4 in CAA play and 13-11 overall. The Tigers fell to 5-17 and 2-10 in league play.

Fouch was 7-for-9 from the floor and connected on 6-of-7 three-point attempts. Fouch was one of eight players to score at least eight points as the Dragons scored 63 bench points in the win. Freshman Derrick Thomas chipped in with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Drexel led by just one in the early going but went on a 13-1 to take control of the game. Gerald Colds and Fouch made three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. After a Robert Nwankwo free throw, Leon Spencer scored on a short jumper and Fouch hit another trey to give the Dragons a 13-point lead. They went to intermission ahead 47-30 and opened the second half with a 19-2 run.

Upset: Georgia State 61, George Mason 57


ATLANTA - Jihad Ali scored a career-high 22 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 42 seconds left, as Georgia State knocked off George Mason, 61-57, Wednesday at the GSU Sports Arena.

Knocking off the Colonial Athletic Association's first-place team, the Panthers (10-14, 4-8 CAA) snapped a three-game skid while halting Mason's (15-8, 10-2 CAA) seven-game winning streak.

With GSU trailing 57-53 with under three minutes to play, Joe Dukes hit a pair of free throws to pull the Panthers within two with 2:37 left.
Ali rebounded a miss by Mason's Cam Long, but Dukes missed the front end of a one-and-one.

GSU forced another miss, and this time Ousman Krubally grabbed the defensive rebound. After a timeout, Dukes fed Ali in the corner for the trey to put the Panthers ahead, 58-57. After another stop by the Panthers, Krubally was fouled and sank both free throws for a 60-57 advantage with 20 seconds left.

Georgia State survived two more missed shots by the Patriots, and Dukes rebounded and hit a free throw with one second left for the final margin.

"I'm just thankful for this team. We lost three close ones on the road, but they kept fighting," said GSU head coach Rod Barnes.
"Jihad Ali hit a big shot for us, and at the end our defense got a couple of stops to close out the win. Down the stretch, I kept telling them, they have to believe they're going to win the game. And they did."

FAIRFAX, Va. - Cam Long hit a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds to play to force overtime and the Patriots, after rallying from a 15-point deficit, beat VCU, 82-77 in front of the largest student crowd in George Mason school history. The Patriots beat the Rams with 5,486 fans in attendance including 2,091 students. Mason broke the school record for consecutive home wins against Colonial Athletic Association opponents as the Patriots have now won 18 straight against CAA teams at Patriot Center.

After shooting 53.6 percent in the first half, Mason (16-9, 11-3) held VCU (17-6, 9-5) to 36 percent shooting in the second half and just 25 percent shooting in overtime. The Patriots, meanwhile, shot just 40.9 percent in the first half but 50 percent in the second half and overtime. Mike Morrison had 17 of his career-high 18 points in the second half and overtime as Mason rallied from a 43-28 second-half deficit to take the only regular-season meeting between the teams. Morrison also had 10 boards, his fourth career double-double. Larry Sanders, who entered the game averaging 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.6 blocks and was top six in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and blocks, finished with 13 points, four rebounds and one block on 5 of 12 shooting. He fouled out late in regulation.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Junior guard Charles Jenkins (Queens. NY) scored a game-high 32 points while junior forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) set Hofstra records for blocks in a career and a season to push the Pride past Drexel, 75-64, in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup Wednesday evening at the Mack Sports Complex.

Freshman guard Chaz Williams (Brooklyn, NY) came close to becoming the first player in Hofstra history to post a triple-double, adding 20 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as Hofstra improved to 13-13 and 6-8 in conference play. Freshman forward Halil Kanacevic (Staten Island, NY) just missed notching his fifth double-double, compiling nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Drexel, which was led by junior guard Jamie Harris with 19 points, dropped to 14-12 and 9-5 in the CAA.

William & Mary's Quinn McDowell drained four 3-pointers and tallied 19 points as the Tribe rallied from 11 down to win 63-60, ending George Mason's 18-game win streak at home in CAA games

FAIRFAX, Va. - Rallying from an 11-point halftime deficit, the William and Mary men's basketball snapped George Mason's school-record 18-game home conference winning streak and in the process tied its own school record for road wins in a season with a 63-60 victory over the Patriots on Tuesday night at the Patriot Center. Senior guard David Schneider's driving lay-up with 58 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner, while fellow classmate Danny Sumner blocked the Patriots' (16-11, 11-5 CAA) game-winning chance with less than 10 seconds remaining to preserve the win. The College (19-7, 11-5 CAA) tallied its fourth straight victory and won for the ninth time on the road this season.

Former VCU men’s basketball coach Dana Kirk has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 74.

Dana Kirk, the flamboyant coach who helped give Virginia Commonwealth University's basketball program increased visibility before moving to Memphis State and incurring legal and NCAA problems, died Monday in Memphis.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reported Mr. Kirk suffered a heart attack. He was 74.

Chuck Noe and Mr. Kirk were the charismatic coaches who gave VCU's program credibility during the 1970s. Noe didn't have a losing season in six years.

Mr. Kirk, an assistant at Louisville under Denny Crum, was named coach in 1976 and took the program to a higher level. In three seasons, he went 57-23. That included VCU's first 20-win season in 1977-78 and its first trip to the postseason, the National Invitation Tournament.

The Rams were 24-5 and 20-5 in his final two seasons.

"He made it a place where you could come and win, and you could get to the next level," said Edmund Sherod, who played two seasons under Mr. Kirk and later played in the NBA. "He had a vision for VCU. He knew what he was doing, and he wanted to get that program to where people respected it. He knew he had to get some kids from Richmond to do that.

"He was a good coach. Especially in that last five minutes of the game, he was something special."

Mr. Kirk also stood out with attention-grabbing outfits.

VCU wins, now what?

Rodriguez came out with guns-a-blazing, scoring 18 of his 24 points in the first half of VCU’s 76-62 victory over the JMU Dukes.

The game was a battle of styles as VCU’s guards traded baskets with JMU’s Denzel Bowles, who went off for 31 points on 13-17 shooting.

VCU’s backcourt proved to be too much for the Duke’s in front of a packed senior night crowd, as Rodriguez, Ed Nixon (10), Bradford Burgess (16), and Brandon Rozzell (10) were able to hit the big shots when it mattered most.

Well, they eventually had to play teams other than UNCW and UD. If they only had to play teams like that they could've been undefeated!!! Hard to get excited over a Friday win - the real tournament starts on Saturday. My Hens will be safely home in Newark watching TV by the time that happens.
