Jon, I have no doubt your position that nothing happens at UI that doesn't happen anywhere else is substantially correct. That being the case, the Orange and Blue Nation just needs to knock off the hollier than thou crap and embrace the fact that they're just as dirty as everybody else.

The KY and FSU folk as an example just accept that they are/were dirty as all holy hell, but it's OK cuz they win. UIUC just isn't as good as most other programs at being dirtier than a shithouse rat cuz they manage to get caught ALL THE TIME, OVER AND OVER.

Not quite spot on but pretty darn close. Illinois has the potential to be one of the best programs in the Big10. KU is one of the top programs in the nation. Pretty easy choice for a Big8/12 guy to leave Illinois and go back to the school where he got his start as a coach.

Valid argument until when hired he said that was the end of his "Larry Brown" act. Gunther made that a priority prior to his hire; if it wasn't his dream job then the Illini weren't interested. Self's word was as good as a Goldman Sachs broker on the Greek Bond desk. Glad he's gone and he's a dick not because we want him there; but because he's a fricken dirt bag.

Oral Roberts to Tulsa to Illinois is a "Larry Brown" act? I call that career advancement and Kansas is a good step up from Illinois. I first noticed Self when he was at ORU and from what I have learned about him he probably really meant it when he told Gunther that he had no intention of leaving. Of course, he didn't dream that a program as good and storied as Kansas' would come calling either. When it did, the circumstances changed in a way he hadn't considered and his position changed as a result. Should he have honored his commitment to Gunther and Illinois? It's easy to sit on the side and say yes but if you're in that position, it's a pretty tough call.

This UNI fan appreciates all of the good will the Panthers are getting!

When Northern Iowa takes the court against Michigan State on Friday at the Edward Jones Dome, it will be playing on its own floor. At least the one it will take back to McLeod Center for the 2010-2011 season.

Congrats to UNI After the bracket was announced Its clear that the UNI fans on here were correct in that they should have been a #5-#7 seed. Nevertheless, knocking off the top #1 seed makes UNI a cinderella.

For the record, I completely understand your feelings about the Illini. I have similar feelings about the Hawkeyes. While I can't stand the Hawkeyes, I think Pearl is a great coach and did the right thing. It's been interesting to see him succeed while Jimmy Collins has been treading water at UIC.

Larry Brown jumped from job to job regardless of whether it was a move up or down. He's a nomad who wears out his welcome. Jumping from ORU to Tulsa to Illinois is career advancement not nomadic jumping. You can disagree but I believe that Self meant it when he told Gunther he was going to stay at Illinois. A coach like Self has the ultimate confidence in his ability to build a staff and then recruit and coach a team to the top. Self would have put a fences up around Chicago and East St. Louis and kept the best recruits in state. He then would have coached those guys to multiple Big 10 championships and runs in the NCAA tournament, exactly what Illini fans expect/hope for. IMO Self had every intention of doing just that until the Kansas opportunity unexpectedly came up. He probably took the Kansas job for a number of reasons: it's another step up, greater history & name recognition means better recruiting on a national level, it's in the Big 12 and where he started so in some ways it's home.

I don't really have a problem with the University itself, they aren't any different than anybody else out there.

I find the fanbase very entertaining, however, as they try to position themselves as important as Florida or Duke, and as clean and pure as a DIII program.

They're pissy that they will never have the national status of Ohio St, Michigan, or even Penn State. And in denial that they're just as dirty if not more so than Memphis, USC, Kentucky, and all of the rest.

The entertainment value is extremely high.

Really enjoyed this year's team and the run they made. Got back from St. Louis last night. Proud of the Panthers and think they'll be back next year. Lose some key senior but have a very strong bench and should be able to leverage this year's success.
