NAU in Disarray?

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

NAU's men's basketball team just kicked Senior G Jermaine Calvin & Senior G Matt Johnson (second leading scorer) off the team this week for violations of team rules. Add that to a possibly season-ending foot injury to Senior PG Josh Wilson & the 'Jacks now look to need a biblical-style miracle just to make the Big Sky Tournament.

Portland State was so concerned about winning at Weber State, that they forgot about everyone else in the conference, lost at ISU by 9 for their 4th conference loss, I wonder how Domanic Waters feels right now.

Men's Tournament Scenarios w/ 1 Week (+) left

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

This is pretty complex, so I hope I got everything right…

"OR" is inclusive, not exclusive

        • Tournament Berths

WEB, UMT, PSU - Already clinched.

ISU - Clinches with a win OR an NAU loss OR if MSU finishes 7-9.

MSU - Clinches with 2 wins.
  • - OR a win over UNC AND an ISU win.
    - OR a win AND an ISU win AND 2 UNC wins.
    - OR an EWU loss AND an NAU loss.
UNC* - Clinches with 2 wins.
  • - OR a win over MSU AND either MSU finishing 7-9 OR both an EWU loss AND an NAU loss.
    - OR a win over MSU AND 2 more MSU losses AND either an EWU loss OR an NAU loss.
    - OR a win over UMT AND either an NAU loss OR both 2 ISU losses AND 2 MSU losses.
EWU* - Clinches with a win AND 2 UNC losses AND either an NAU loss OR 2 ISU losses.
  • - OR with a win AND 3 MSU losses AND either an NAU loss OR a UNC loss to UMT.
    - OR with a win AND an NAU loss AND both MSU AND UNC finishing 7-9.
    - OR with 2 UNC losses AND an NAU loss to WEB.
NAU* - Clinches with 2 wins AND either a UNC loss OR both 2 MSU losses AND 2 ISU losses.
  • - OR with a win over WEB AND 2 UNC losses AND an EWU loss.
  • * - Any possible RPI tiebreakers involving EWU, UNC, & possibly NAU would go to EWU.
        • (at least) Home Quarterfinal Games
WEB, UMT - Already clinched.

PSU - Clinches with a win OR an ISU loss OR an MSU loss.

ISU - Clinches with 2 wins.
  • - OR with a win AND an MSU loss.
    - OR with a UNC loss AND MSU finishing 7-9.
    - OR with 3 MSU losses AND an NAU loss to WEB.
MSU - Clinches with 3 wins AND either an ISU loss OR a PSU loss to EWU.
  • - OR with 2 wins AND 2 ISU losses.
UNC - Clinches with 2 wins AND 1 other MSU loss AND 2 ISU losses.

NAU - Clinches with 2 wins AND 2 ISU losses AND 3 MSU losses AND a UNC loss to UMT.

        • First-Round Byes
WEB - Already clinched.

UMT - Clinches w/ a win OR a PSU loss OR both an MSU win over UNC AND an MSU win over WEB.

PSU - Clinches w/ 2 wins AND a UMT loss AND either a UNC win over MSU OR an MSU loss to WEB.
  • * - PSU should win a potential RPI tiebreaker over Montana in the event that they tie for second and MSU & UNC tie at 7-9.
        • Regular Season Title
WEB - Already clinched.

Would have been nice for PSU to lose tonight. Would have given the Griz the automatic 1st round bye without even playing UNC.

Updated Men's Tournament Scenarios (w/ seed info)

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

I was wrong on my earlier post when I said the PSU/Montana tiebreaker could come down to RPI if MSU & UNC tie. I originally thought that with the common games tiebreaker, when looking at two other tied teams, the record against those two teams was supposed to be looked at collectively (i.e. combined record). Instead, the lower tie is apparently broken first and then whoever wins that is looked at first for the original tie. In other words, if MSU & UNC tie @ 7-9, Montana would win the common games tiebreaker over Portland State because MSU would win its tiebreaker with UNC (on common games against Weber).

Here's the specific scenarios after tonight's games. Everyone has one game regular season game left except MSU & Weber (2 each), and Montana (finished).

WEB - (1): Already Clinched.

UMT - (2): Needs a PSU loss OR an MSU win over UNC.
  • (3): Needs a PSU win AND a UNC win over MSU.
PSU - (2): Needs a win AND a UNC win over MSU.
  • (3): Needs a loss OR an MSU win over UNC.
ISU - (4): Already clinched.

UNC - (5): Needs a win over MSU.
  • (6): Needs a loss to MSU.
MSU - (5): Needs a win over UNC.
  • (6): Needs a loss to UNC AND either a win over WEB OR an EWU loss.
Out: Needs 2 losses AND an EWU win.
EWU - (6): Needs a win AND 2 MSU losses.
  • Out: Needs a loss OR an MSU win.
