Thanks Quinn for the scoop...

Dino Gaudio has been relieved of his duties as the men's basketball coach at Wake Forest.
The university has scheduled a press conference for 4:30 Wednesday at BB&T Field's Deacon Tower to make the official announcement.
A person close to the program said that Gaudio will not be given the final four years on his contract, which was extended before the start of the 2009-10 season. Although Gaudio is 61-31 overall in three seasons and has coached the Deacons to the NCAA Tournament the past two years, Athletics Director Ron Wellman is not satisfied with the way the Deacons have closed the past two seasons.
Gaudio's teams were 16-17 in his three seasons in February and March.
His 2008-09 team lost to Maryland in the ACC Tournament and to Cleveland State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. His 2009-10 team lost to No. 12 seed Miami in the first round of the ACC Tournament, beat Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament but was routed 90-60 by Kentucky in the second round.
No replacement will be named at the press conference.

Not surprised - Wake has had late season meltdowns since Tim Duncan and Dave Odom were player/coach. I liked Prosser and Dino seems like a pretty good coach, but their inconsistency through the season and especially late gets tiresome. Gaudio was only there because he'd followed Prosser around as assistant for a lot of years when Skip passed away.
Any prospects on a replacement?

You want someone that Charlotte just fired for late season collapses?

1) It was a joke, 2) I could care less who Wake Forest hires, 3) Bobby Lutz?

The only thing funnier than Bobby Lutz is UNCC itself.

wow, what does WF expect? They weren't a powerhouse, but they have been good. Made the tournament this year, and made it into the second round too.

This reminds me of Nebraska firing Solich for going 9-3, and then they wen't through 10 years of suckitude after.

 Happens to the best of us. It's always fun to get a jab in at the "leprechaun" Bobby Lutz.

Yeah... I think Wake thinks too highly of itself. 61-31... his record was similar to Prosser's and Odom's. I'm not sure what they expect...

No matter who they get it looks like they are gonna be going through some tough times the next couple of years. That's a shame.

They deserve it...what a frigging joke.....:ohno:....It's not like Wake has this storied past that Gaudio didn't live up to...look at Odom. Had Tim Duncan for 4 years....4 years...& consistently disappointed in the postseason (outside of ACC Tourney). 4 years with Tim Duncan & didn't even sniff the Final Four. Prior to that? Let's try Bob Staak & Carl Tacy...it's a private Southern Baptist college in the shithole known as Winston-Salem who doesn't even have on-campus facilities for the sport's teams... :ohno: ...& Winston isn't exactly a mecca for college students...it's biggest claim to fame post-RJR & post- Tim Duncan is being the setting for the reality show "Madhouse" about local rednecks racing at Bowman Gray...

Understood...& agree...fokker was unconscience in 1995 ACC Tourney in GSO, then faded to oblivion from whence he came....but not before beating the heels in the finals....

I know...he was a UNC killer. It did me well to see Odom suck it up at USC.

He's chump change.

The man at Wake was the 3-sporter, one Mr. Rusty LaRue, Wake point guard, QB and a season of baseball.

Image

My favorite UMass game was when Wake played at the Mullins Center and Camby dominated Tim Duncan.

Wow, I haven't thought of Rusty in a long time. :thumb:

...not to mention that LaRue was married with a kid or two, straight A's, and playing 3 sports. He showed up at my gym once and we worked out together even though I had no idea who he was. :?

And, I don't remember exactly (as I was pretty young) but I think Rusty passed for 500+ yards in a game as QB for Wake.

I was bored so I just looked it up.

He had two 500+ games (both in 1995) and has the Wake Forest single game record with 545 passing yards.

This I don't get...

Wellman fired Gaudio, who won 66 percent of his games in three seasons, on Wednesday for a 1-5 postseason record and the team's poor record in February and March.

Bzdelik's teams at Colorado, a rebuilding job in the Big 12, weren't good in any month. He went 36-58 in three seasons — compared to a 61-31 mark for Gaudio in the same time span — and 10-38 in the Big 12.

I couldn't open your link Chris, but here's some more troubling stuff - makes me think this had to be personal.....

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—Colorado basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik met with his team and told them he has neither accepted nor been offered the coaching position at Wake Forest.

A statement released by the school Sunday explained that Bzdelik informed his squad he will meet with Wake Forest officials on Monday to talk about the opening.

The Demon Deacons fired coach Dino Gaudio last week after three seasons in which he compiled a 61-31 record. Gaudio was a combined 1-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA tournament games.

Bzdelik is 36-58 in three seasons with the Buffaloes. Colorado showed signs of improvement last season by turning in a 15-16 record. The team almost stunned a top-ranked Kansas team in February, falling 72-66 in overtime.

Before taking over at Colorado, Bzdelik found plenty of success during a two-year stint at Air Force, where he was 50-16. He led the Falcons to the NCAA tournament in 2005-06 and to the Final Four of the NIT the following season.

Bzdelik also spent 2 1/2 years coaching the Denver Nuggets, leading them to a 73-119 mark.

Well, you didn't miss much, it's just the Observer's blog. It basically said the same thing. It does appear to be personal, because the guys obviously has a worse record than Gaudio. The article also states that Wake's AD is a personal friend of Bzdelik. :?
Bzdelik does have a connection to both the state of North Carolina and Wellman. Bzdelik's first coaching job was with Davidson in 1978 and he later was an assistant at Northwestern in the early 1980s, where Wellman was the baseball coach.

If Wellman wants to replace the basketball coach, that's certainly his prerogative, as is his right to hire someone he knows, but given the parameters of Gaudio's firing, this potential move doesn't make any sense.
