Now he's going to UNC-W. And the move continues.

His family must love him. Move, get settled, move, get settled and repeat. :?

What a POS. I'm glad he's gone. I'm hoping (but not counting on it) that Charlie makes a call to Dino Gaudio. It may be a stretch for our program, but wouldn't be a big move (location wise) for Dino.

I've stated on the blog, etc, "worst hire ever".

If you're UNCW, you hope you can get a guy who comes for 3-4 years and leaves for an A10/CUSA type of job. But Peterson has proven that he'll leave after a single year. At CCU, he interviewed at CofC after 1 year (CofC passed on him for Cremins). At App St, after 1 year, he interviewed at Marshall (was passed over). So he leaves for UNCW.

You know he'll be leaving...so why hire him?

Why leave after a year though, especially to go to a smaller less successful program? I have no love for Buzz, but he had some success with ASU in both his brief appearances.

My heart just bleeds for Anthony Breeze who dumped CCU to follow his butt-buddy Buzz.

Have fun moron!

Out of everyone, he's one to feel sorry for. Buzz betrayed him twice. He's a young man. Give him some slack.

At least he'll leave UNCW better off than when he got there.

Breeze leaving was what led to Coastal having as good of a season as they had this year. You should be glad he left.

Fuck Buzz.

And I say hell no to Dino Gaudio. I don't want anybody with connections to the big instate ACC schools. I'd rather take a chance on someone that is loyal to Appalachian.

Image
Matt McMahon begins his 10th season on Appalachian’s bench. McMahon handles a great deal of the team’s defensive planning and coaching in addition to his duties in player development and recruiting.

“Matt is extremely organized and knowledgable about this group of players,” said head coach Buzz Peterson. “He’s sharp and recruited a lot of these players, which helps the program.”

One of the hardest-working individuals in his field, McMahon has been a tireless worker since stepping onto campus. A passionate member of the Appalachian basketball family, McMahon is a recognizable figure in the local community and recruiting trail.

This past offseason, the Oak Ridge, Tenn. native was ranked 12th on a list of top mid-major coaches by CollegeInsider.com.

In 2008, McMahon was voted one of the top 20 assistant coaches in the nation by his peers in a FoxSports.com poll. The poll serveyed 450 assistant coaches throughout NCAA Division I programs.

McMahon has strong ties to the Mountaineers. Following a successful playing career for the Black and Gold, he made the transition from player to coach when he was originally named to former head coach Houston Fancher’s first staff on Aug. 2, 2000.

McMahon spent the first part of the 2001-02 season at Tennessee as an administrative graduate assistant under Peterson. He returned to ASU as a member of ASU’s staff during the 2001 season.

A two-year starter for Appalachian, McMahon started all 32 games for the 1999-2000 Southern Conference regular-season and tournament championship team that finished 23-9 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. A 6-1 guard, he was a part of the winningest four years in ASU basketball history, wrapping up his career with a 79-39 record under the direction of Peterson. During that time, Appalachian won the 1998, 1999 and 2000 Southern Conference North Division Championships.

A former walk-on to the program, the Oak Ridge, Tenn. product earned an athletic scholarship after three seasons and finished among the team leaders in three-point field goals his final two years. McMahon netted 60-of-132 long-range goals (.455) during his junior campaign to lead the team in three-point goals, attempts and accuracy.

He ranked in the top 20 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage during the 1998-99 season and was also named to the 1999 SoCon All-Tournament first team.

McMahon averaged 23.8 minutes per contest during the 1999-2000 season. He finished second on the squad in three-point field goal shooting, draining 45-of-132 tries (.341) and free-throw shooting, making good on 34-of-43 (.791).

McMahon wrapped up his career at Appalachian seventh on the all-time list with 135 three-point field goals.

He graduated from Appalachian State in May of 2000 with a degree in marketing. In the summer of 2005, McMahon married former Appalachian women’s basketball assistant coach Mary Brock. The couple gave birth to daughter Maris prior to the 2008-09 season.

Aaaaannnnnnnnnndddd Time!

A little bit around 80 hours is all it took for App to find a coach.

And it's Jason Capel. ODU fans might recognize the last name.

Matt McMahon is joining the asshole in the Dub.

Needless to say, I'm shocked (probably more so than Buzzard leaving--7 jobs in 10 years  ). I wonder what the deal is with Matt, was he offered? Yesterday we had heard that Matt and Bobby Lutz were the front runners, and that Capel was going to go with Buzzard. I was solidly in the Bobby Lutz camp...I hope Charlie at least called him. We'll see how this hire works out, Jason has a total of 10 months coaching experience.

*This is also a little bothersome considering Charlie advised Scott Satterfield that he would need to go away from ASU and get more coaching experience if he wanted to be head football coach at ASU one day.

.....as one of my former co-workers just e-mailed,

We're a football school.

Zero experience aside from having been a decent player, but his dad is a coach. :ohno:

Yup, it'll be interesting. I don't get the hire, but I'm hoping JC is able to put the questions to rest with a lot of wins.

Was McMahon even considered? Don't understand if he wasn't. Capel has a name & not much else. McMahon was an alumnus & had the respect of his coaching peers...had paid his dues....

This is pretty much what I take away from this. People wonder why our students, alumni, non-alumni fans, locals, etc. don't support basketball as much as football... this is a great example of why. The administration doesn't care about it... Can you imagine Cobb, or anyone else involved, just going through the motions of hiring the next football coach when Jerry Moore retires?

The thing is we've had some good seasons, this being one of them. Hell, they were paying Buzz about the same as Jerry but without the experience or winning tradition. :ohno: That kind of PO'd me when they first announced his hiring last year.
App football has always produced a decent crowd, but only got crazy since we started winning a lot. Basketball will likely never get to those levels we've seen in recent years, but we seem to recruit well enough to be competitive at least in league play. Hopefully Capel can get a little excitement behind ASU BB and the crowds will begin to show up. I don't mind a 3 hr drive to watch a football game, but I'll barely drive to FU or Wofford for away games as it stands. :twocents:

Glad I am not still in Wilmington... I was the producer for the Brad Brownell/Benny Moss show at WAAV.

It would not be fun to work with Buzz
