The Portland State men's basketball team will take a preseason trip to Nassau, Bahamas to compete against three teams and get an early look at their prospects for the coming year.
The Vikings will begin practice on Wednesday at the Stott Center in preparation for the trip that runs Sept. 9-15. PSU plays three games, including Sept. 10 against Cybots Club Team, Sept. 12 against the Commonwealth Giants and Sept. 13 against the Bahama All-Stars.
Second-year Head Coach Tyler Geving looks forward to the opportunity for early team development as the NCAA permits basketball teams to take one out-of-season trip every four years.
"This is the first year you can have new players go on your trip," said Geving, referring to freshmen and transfers. "That will be good with the new faces we have in the program. It is a good opportunity to get 10 practices in and evaluate the team's strengths and weaknesses. This will give us a foundation to build on.
"More than that, it should be a good team-building experience - a chance for the guys to bond ahead of the coming season. We want to develop that aspect of our team more."
Portland State will have 14 players on the roster and available for practice. Redshirt Michael Harthun will not be eligible to play in games due to his transfer status.
The Vikings have three starters and eight letterwinners returning from the 2009-10 season. PSU was 13-17 overall, 7-9 in the Big Sky Conference and reached the Big Sky Tournament semifinals.
The full practice slate for the 2010-11 campaign will begin on Oct. 15. PSU has a 30-game schedule, including 15 home contests.

Any others of the Big Sky taking pre-season trips? I know Canada's popular with some.
