As the University of Hawaii considers its next step in a swiftly changing conference landscape, school officials continue to explore future scheduling options with an eye on possibly becoming an independent in football.

Athletic director Jim Donovan said Army and Navy, both independents, have responded positively to the prospect of playing UH in the middle of what would be a conference season.

Donovan said UH also initiated contact with Notre Dame regarding a possible home-and-home arrangement farther down the line, and "they said there's an interest."

If Hawaii did go independent in football, they would likely push to join the California-based Big West for non-football sports.

They'd likely have to subsidize the Big West schools in order to gain an invitation. However, if in the Big West, Hawaii would need only to fly into the two markets of Los Angeles (LAX, Long Beach, Ontario, Burbank, Orange County) and San Francisco (SFO, Oakland, San Jose). It's a much better option than having to fly to Utah, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, etc.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

HI has been in the Big West before. Not likely to happen again due to Commish Dumb-Dumb Dennis Farrell's wet dream of the Cali Bus League.

Epjr, note that regarding the Big West, I wrote that as a speculation piece. No confirmation from Big West now Hawaii.

And I don't know how good a move this would be for them.
