The College Basketball Invitational. It started 3 years ago (I think), 1 year before the collegeinsider.com tournament. Its one quirk is that the championship game is actually a 3 game series.

Apparently Weber was promised a home game in the CBI, but was screwed out of it & is now going to Eugene to play Oregon.

Here's the bracket:

  • First Round

James Madison @ Davidson - Tuesday

San Jose St. @ Creighton - Tuesday

    Duquesne @ Montana - Wednesday

Weber St. @ Oregon - Wednesday

Austin Peay @ Boise St. - Tuesday

    Hofstra @ Evansville - Tuesday

Miami (OH) @ Rhode Island - Wednesday

St. Bonaventure @ Central Florida - Wednesday

All QF games are next Monday, the SFs are next Wednesday, and the title series is 3/28, 3/30, and (if necessary) 4/1.

Apparently the Oregon/Weber winner will host the Duquesne/UM winner. I don't know about the other hosting scenarios.

I am very un-happy right now

The CBI promised Weber a home game and then turned around and gave it to Oregon.

Did Weber put money down on the game? If they didn't promise the money the promise of a home game is null and void.

It was my understanding that Weber DID put money down. My theory is Oregon must have offered more and the CBI gave it to them instead

Oregon has a 16-17 record and Weber has a 18-13 record and the team with the losing record gets the home game. :ohno:

I believe I read that it was over 50K to host a game in the CBI. That is a big reason UNI took the CIT over the CBI as the CIT is 20K cheaper per game.

I wonder if Oregon contacted Weber and said they would return the trip to Ogden in the near future if Weber would play at Oregon this year.

That would be the only thing that would make me feel better about it.

Which Oregon will promptly buy their way out of as soon as they can....

What's worng with thm buying it out? It saved your school 50k, at the very minimum, this year plus a pretty decent buy out in the future. If that's the case that's a likely 70-80k net gain for WSU at the very minimum. IDK if the budget isn't as bad in utah as Iowa right now but that would be huge for UNI

Thats true, and the best way to look at it,

but im a fan, and the idea that a Pac 10 school would come play Weber at the Dee (something that not even teams like San Diego State, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado State, UNLV, Boise State or even Air Force will do) entices me more than a buyout :|

Well now Im really pissed, this is not the answer I wanted to hear.

Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee said Weber State signed a contract with the CBI and guaranteed the money needed to host a first round game.

Quote from Randy Rahe in the Standard Examiner (local newspaper)

"What they told us was when all the brackets came down and all the NIT bids came out, there were a lot more "HIGH MAJOR" teams that wanted to be in the tournament and the CBI felt "OBLIGATED" to give them home games and we got bumped".

So an 18-13 Weber State team lost thier guaranteed home game to a 16-17 Oregon team just because the CBI felt obligated to give the bigger schools the home games.

In other words, Oregon said - we host, or we don't play.

Seriously, though...who really gives a crap if Oregon's in...they could've replaced them with another team fairly easily.
