The guy had a 70% fan approval rating and an outstanding record. He promoted the heck out of the school and gave back to the community in ways schools should be happy about.

Is this a mistake?

I'm a Tennessee fan. And, no it wasn't a mistake. He's a liar. It doesn't matter how good of a coach he is or how irrelevant we will be again without him. Why would you ever want a liar running a major program at a school you support?

Same reason Tressel should be fired at Ohio State. Doubt they have the integrity, though.

So how about taking the big risk here. Do you roll the dice on Summitt?

Summit is a great WOMEN'S coach, but Men's basketball is a totally different game. I just don't think the gamble would work.

lol. no.

She's a great basketball coach... and it would be interesting to see what she could do with a set of quality players.

But, no way in hell could she recruit the top basketball players you need to be successful. Men's college basketball is so watered down now... a lot of the best teams just recruit top talent and let them play. Very little coaching necessary. She could not recruit top tier male talent. No way in hell.

An ABA team has already had a female coach -- in the state of TENNESSEE. She guided that team to a playoff berth despite turmoil amongst the ownership team, ultimately resigning when the ownership declined the berth. She was all of 22 years old, fresh out of Vandy. If a young coach like that can do it at the professional level, who's to say that a coach of Summitt's experience can't do it in college?

Like I said in another thread... not going to happen

maybe for an attention-starved program would do this... but UT is a coveted job.

Summit wouldn't be able to recruit for shit - it would bury their program and be dismissed as a stunt

You didn't address my point that Summitt would not be able to recruit top tier high school male talent. The ABA coach you mentioned didn't have to recruit. She was handed a team. I said it would be interesting to see how Summitt could do if she had a team in place and just had to coach them. She is an incredible coach for any sex. I think she could do a good job simply coaching a male team. But, I don't believe she could convince the highest level of high school males with HUGE ego's to come play for a woman. Just don't see it happening, sorry.

That's a fair enough argument. SOME around here are so misogynistic that they're offended by the mere idea. Being able to recruit for the team and being able to COACH the team are two entirely different functions. I personally think that aside from the uniqueness of the idea, she could convince guys to come play for her. I'm willing, for the sake of argument, however, to accept your assertion to the contrary as a reason for not going there. That certainly comes across better than the other reason....

Ok, let's take it to the other dominant women's coach right now...

Could Geno A coach the men's game? Would he have to go to a smaller school and work his way back up on this side to get a shot?

no - he could probably jump in to a fairly prominent (now on hard times) program and bring it back.

as i said to sh in another thread - i'm not saying i like it - but you're going to have a hard time convincing young recruits to come play for a woman.

the attitude Geno has would get him slapped down by a guy like Renardo Sidney

it's not about misogyny on my part - it's about understanding the reality of 16 and 17 year old boys in a hyper-macho environment. i'm a realist - she'd struggle mightily - and the minute she lost recruiting battles (esp for any in-state talent) the alumni and donors would be calling for her head (fairly or not)

i have little doubt she's CAPABLE of coaching - what I do doubt is that she can bring in the top-tier players. and in the college game, like it or not, RECRUITING is the most important part of the job - and Summit, of all people, knows that better than anyone.
