Montana vs Boise St, Selvig gets his 700th....

Post by grizzaholic »

Just got back from the womens bball game tonight. Nice ceremony for Selvig. He got the game ball and plaque for his 700th win as well as a quilt that somebody had made that was a memory type of thing. A bunch of highlights from his first 700 wins. Really an artistic piece of work.

But these things are not what I am posting about, but should be. The stadium should have been packed for this milestone as well as playing an old BSC team. Hardly, the announced attendance was 4300 or so. They had articles in the paper as well as announcing the game tonight at the Griz football game yesterday multiple times. They were giving away shirts, posters, and little pendants to the first 700 fans, and so forth. They also had deals on tickets, 7 for 7 bucks. I mean come on, it is a buck to show up to the game. My tickets were only 7 dollars apiece. I would have figured that people would have been chomping at the bit to show up for this, but I was wrong. There should be no excuses.

Congrats to Selvig and the Lady Griz, just wish there were more people there to celebrate with you.

Congrats to Selvig - he has truly kept Montana a dominant Women's team.

Yeah Grizza it's too bad that the BBall programs are suffering due to the dumb moves by Bill Moos in taking away the "Zoo" and thus eliminating a ton of excitement from the BBall games. In their thirst to cash in on GSA dollars and move the students from their rightful place courtside they killed it. From 1986 to 1993 I didn't miss but maybe one BBall game on the mens side and I had a comparable record for the women's. I said fuck em' when they pulled that shit and I've been to maybe two games since 1994. They ruined it and they got what they deserve for doing so. It's too bad that the coaches and players have to pay the price for the bone headed moves of the Administration but they took the fun away and the only way to let them know that I don't approve is to let my tickets go and thus give them the middle finger. If they ever bring the "Zoo" back then I may consider going again but they will only do so if they are forced to by the attendance being lackluster not because they just want to correct a wrong that they pulled on the community.

Thanks for saying what I couldn't figure out how to say and make it sound like it came from a human being.

Do you not like the arena, or the seating policy?

No the arena is great. Lots of screens to see stats that constantly rotate from team to team and player to player. The acoustics are amazing. The seating policy is fine except for the student section. They put them in these bleachers right behind both baskets. They used to be on the floor on the side but due to lackluster student attendance, U of M's words not mine, they pulled their tix and sold them to season ticket holders. Last year, or maybe it was the year before, they had 2 games in which the side was opened up to the students and they packed it both times, and the admin said that they would seriously consider putting the students back on the side. The students showed up for a few games but they didn't show up in very good numbers to most of the games. The admin said they had their chance and voiced it loud and clear that they obviously didn't want to show up to games like DUKE and other big name schools do in support of their bball temas.

I have no problem with the arena but I had no problem with it before they sunk the millions into it for the facellift. They thought that could bring back the crowds by updating the facility when they true problem was the seating policy they instituted by moving the students from the court side seats and turning them into a cushy spot for the GSA members. They moved the students behind the backboards and left a couple of corner seats for them and absolutely killed the excitement of going to those games. There is no electricity in the air at the games any more. I don't have a stake in it as the student section wasn't messed with until after I was no longer a student but the money grubbing fucks really pissed a lot of people off after the 91-92 seasons. They took something that was great and turned it into shit for a little more donation in the kitty from GSA members. There used to regularly be 7-8K there for games and close to 9K for the Bobcat game. I bet the attendance is down by 50% since the 91-92 seasons.

More than that. I want to say, but don't quote me on it, the Lady's get around 4k to most games while the Men get about a thousand less. At least that is what I noticed in the 15+ games I went to last year.

The men & women actually get about the same attendance. Last year, the men averaged 4230 per game while the women averaged 3935. The Lady Griz obviously rank much higher relative to other women's teams, though.

As for the students courtside thing, I'm don't really get the outrage. The loss of "The Zoo" atmosphere wasn't because the students were moved. The administration should put them where they can make the most impact on the game, & I figure that would be underneath the baskets where they can stare right at the free throw shooters. The problem isn't where the students are, it's that there aren't enough of them & the ones that are there just sit quietly most of the time (other than the band). If moving the students courtside is what it takes to get a lot more students to the games, then I'm all for it, but there's no real reason to expect that would work.

You mean other than the fact that it did work and work well up until after the 1992 season? The reason that there are few there now is because there is no tradition that gets handed to the new students when they are coming in like there was back in the mid 70's, and 80's. The Zoo was a great home court advantage and Dahlberg was ranked by one of the sports mags as the 8th toughest place to play in the nation. We used to have the football type Griz atmosphere in our basketball arena and moving the Zoo was a stupid thing to do. The kids did more on the East side bleachers than they have ever done in the ends. You don't need the students in the ends when they are giving the business to the other team on the side it's infectious and the cheap seats in the ends will do their part anyway. The tradition of making the arena a tough place to play is gone now so I'm damn sure there aren't many there anymore and the toning down of the atmosphere is the reason.
