The governor "invited" eight D1 schools to the mansion.
He has wanted a VA holiday BB tournament.

At the suggestion of Gov. Bob McDonnell, a college basketball doubleheader involving state schools is expected to be held at the Richmond Coliseum in December 2012 and 2013.

Virginia and Old Dominion are expected to play, along with the Richmond and George Mason, in 2012. Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison and Hampton are projected as participants in 2013.

Details about an announcement are expected from the governor's office. Dolly Vogt, general manager of the Coliseum, said there would be a news conference Wednesday.

The event will not be a tournament, but a double-header: two games on one night, and no second round.

don't know how they picked the teams but I think it should have been ODU and VCU (two top midmajor programs in the state) and VaTech and UVA (VA BCS programs) in the first year of this so-called "tournament".

These schools already play each other twice during conference play right? I would think all the programs would want to avoid playing a team 3 times.

This - plus Tech and UVA have been somewhat slow in scheduling their mid-major in-state compatriots (for very good reason)...

By the way, ODU next time could you please finish off Butler?

Well hornet, if I'm correct, I don't think this is an actual "tournament". More just a double header at the Richmond Coliseum so VCU and ODU wouldn't play each other for a third time even though its happened the last 3 years with ODU winning twice at the coliseum. :D

And Rob, my roommate is actually friends with the player (I believe it was Shawn Vanzant) who threw up that last second shot against ODU and my roommate said even Shawn realized they got lucky that Matt Howard was able to tip it in as time expired. :ohno: It was an appropriate ending though considering that ODU had numerous games during the regular season that came down to the last shot.
