Heading into conference play, the ten team SWAC has a total of SEVEN Division 1 wins, and a record of 7-96 against Division 1 competition. And it's not like the wins are amazing:

Prairie View A&M: vs. Stephen F Austin (6-7)
Southern: vs. Florida A&M (2-12)
Alabama State: @ Florida International (4-10)
Jackson State: vs. Southern Methodist (8-5)
Mississippi Valley State: vs. Tennessee State (8-7)
Texas Southern: vs. Eastern Michigan (5-9)
Arkansas-Pine Bluff: vs. Florida International (4-10)

So none of the teams in the SWAC have more than one win against Division 1 schools, and the total record of the schools they beat is 37-60. This is what the conference currently looks like:

Prairie View A&M..............4-9
Southern University...........4-9
Alabama State.................3-9
Alcorn State....................3-9
Alabama A&M..................2-7
Jackson State..................2-10
Mississippi Valley State.......1-11
Texas Southern................1-11
Arkansas-Pine Bluff............1-12
Grambling State...............0-10

That's what happens when you…
  • a) don't have good teams.
    b) play almost every non-conference game on the road.

Bingo! The league is a far cry from the early to mid 90's when the teams had talent.

you gotta remember JSU had a similar schedule when Lindsey Hunter was there, the team was just MUCH better. Hell the Southern team that beat Georgia Tech lost 5 SWAC games that year.

Yes I know, saw SU on tv over the holidays in a tournament vs New Orleans in '94.I remember the argument that was brought up that when these schools had success against, power schools those same schools would back out of its agreement to play the following yr.It was true Jackson St wanted to renew its game vs Tulane but Tulane back out of its agreement citing a "prior agreement".

Tampa jag I will try to keep an eye on NBA free agents Devin Green (Hampton) and Kevin Galloway(Tx.Southern) this season.Green was signed by the Knicks and Galloway by the Kings who unfortunately just fired its head coach Paul Westphal but after a record of 51-120 they had no choice.Anybody in the SWAC of either gender with talent to play at the next level that you know of right now??????

I remember Trey Johnson 6-5 SG from, JSU in '07 he was among the nation's leading scorers, averaging 26.7 ppg as a senior and as a junior, he was averaging 23.7 a game right now he's a benchwarmer, with the Lakers I thought he had a chance of being drafted. Also there, were two guys back in the following yrs of '03-04 seasons, who I felt had the talent to play in the SWAC but unfortunately never got the opportunity,to show their skills say hello to Daniel Ward of Rochester NY and Sean Smith from my home state of NJ,from Saint Peter's Prep in Jersey City both were 6-7/6-8 wing players that were voted SWAC newcomers of the yr in back to back seasons.

I think Southern is building something solid, they have a young, hungry coach who will actually recruit the area. He's taken a team that lost 11 straight last year (only won 4 games) and has almost doubled the win total so far this season.

Right now the team is being lead by Derrick Beltran (11.6 ppg), Quinton Doggett (11.1 ppg), Mike Celestin (9.8 ppg), Jameel Grace (9.6 ppg).

Also they retired Bob Love's jersey a couple of weeks ago.

Yes I knew about Butterbean's retirement ceremony along with the emergence of Doggett but not the others nobody has a overall winning mark in the SWAC so far.Love the fact that SU is starting to recruit up north especially my homestate(NJ)with players like Grace,Celestin and Bol.The first person I personally saw from NJ on SU's roster was back in '06 his name was Peter Cipriano from the same school that produced Bol (Saint Peter's Prep)Jersey City.

As stated before when it comes to recruiting your coach needs to come north to my backyard(NJ) more often.

There's solid talent in the New Orleans-Baton Rouge area, that he can get, unlike football it's easier to recruit the state. That's Banks' focus, he's a Southern/Louisiana guy.

Southern has won 10 games for the first time in God knows how long. The Jags sit in second place at 6-2, too bad they aren't eligible for the SWAC tourney. Well, that's what happens when you don't take care of business.

We can't make the post season tourney due to APR issues. The two teams play on Monday. Hopefully the Jags can keep it closer than they did in Itta Bena.
