The way I'm reading this, UCONN got caught in the modern system of basketball: transfers and people foregoing the remainder of their eligibility to get drafted. Sure, there were probably some lazy kids who didn't go to class and others who should have been weeded out from the get-go over GPA potential. (You can't help the team if you're ineligible.) The problem is that the APR is so rigid that it doesn't recognize the different reasons someone can leave. There is no legit reason why a school should get hammered over a guy who cashes in the same way they do if a kid flunks out. That said, as it stands now, as the article says, if the baseline is shifted just one year, this penalty wouldn't even be up for discussion.

That said, I don't like UCONN. I'd just like to see the system tweaked so that it makes sense. Punishing a school AFTER they clean house? That's just plain stupid.

The school isn't punished for someone leaving early if they leave on good terms (went to class). Kids who transfer and go pro in bad terms are what kill the APR

What does it matter if they cleaned house? They still went through those 4 years. They shouldn't be held accountable for them?

Congress is investigating potential NCAA abuse of power. Of course, it's a pair of CT Democrats, so there may be a perception of vindictiveness here, sort of like Orrin Hatch investigating the B(C)$ for improprieties in keeping UT out.

For once, I agree with a national-level Democrat. The National Corrupt Athletics Junta has GOT to be reformed or replaced.

The magic number here is a 2.60GPA. If a kid leaves early for the pros or transfers, as long as they have a GPA 2.6 or above it's all good. It's when they have a low GPA that the school takes an APR hit.
