The article and related happenings seemed to spark within me a "what if" scenario or two:

1. Why is the 'release before a player is allowed to transfer' rule in place? Note some coaches have placed restrictions on transferring-out players before they are released from the original program; they often end up in illogical places (e.g. Smotrycz, with his many restrictions in place, ended up in Maryland, an often-losing basketball program.)
2. Why do some basketball players tend to go to JUCOs instead of Division II programs (unlike in football, where many dissatisfied FBS players move down one level [but even a few transferred all the way down to Division II and NAIA]) and play a year there and then return to Division I?
3. Is a Brandon Jennings or Monta Ellis-esque route (i.e. entering the NBA after a year or two outside the NCAA) possible for these players?

Yes if coaches can leave a program why not players Bo Ryan at Wisconsin didn't allow a player to leave the program its a travesty!!!!!!!

Re #2: A guy can spend one year at a JuCo and return to D-I IF he completes his A.A./A.S. during that one year. The 4-2-4 rule states that a player who leaves a 4-year school for a JuCo MUST complete an associate's degree before he is eligible to play again at a 4-year school. Schools sometimes gray-shirt a player like this, but even more often, the kid is trying to escape what s/he sees as a bad situation. My guess as to "why" is that a new recruiting process (coming out of the JuCo) can get him/her back to D-I while playing immediately (in JuCo); D-I is perceived to have better advancement prospects than a D-II or below.

In the end, the Wisconsin thing was handled correctly, and should probably be the basis for all transfers. You can't transfer to another school in your own conference. There are multiple leagues that have that as a rule, the B1G is not one of them...
