Two sources in the Big 12 said Wednesday the possibility of Notre Dame moving its Olympic sports out of the Big East and into the Big 12 is becoming more and more likely.

Speculation is growing among those sources that an announcement could come from South Bend before the end of the summer.

As part of such a move, Notre Dame, which has a contract with NBC to televise its home football games through the 2015 season, would agree to play up to six football games against Big 12 competition (but most likely three or so to start with), sources tell Orangebloods.com.

To me it makes no sense they are in the heart of Big Ten country!!!!!!!!!!

To me it makes no sense they are in the heart of Big Ten country!!!!!!!!!!

Just one problem with that, dal. The Big Ten has already offered ND several times, and ND has always turned them down. At this point, the Ten is likely to just wash their hands of them.

ND see's the writing on the wall. They will position themselves so that football can join a conference that will have a shot at the 4 team playoff. ND football has no such shot if it were to join the BE as full members.

Okay thanks your right I remember the Big Ten making several offers but ND wanted to remain independent many yrs ago.

I think the B1G0 is done reaching out to ND. If ND is interested, they have to make the 1st move.

The Big12 is attractive to ND because they can have their own TV network like Texas is setting up and reap the financial benefits themselves (need D to step in with a comment on Christian charity here ).

Short-term, I don't think ND will do anything. They're riding out their independence and will only jump if they get an unbelievable offer.

ND had a free ride to the B(C)$. It's likely that they THINK that will also happen in this bogus "playoff," but if it's defined as Big Ten/Pac-12/Big 12/SEC, they're probably going to be left out in the cold as an indy. If they got in, who gets left out? Certainly not the SEC champs, and the others will fight to stay in as well. Given that the Big Ten have washed their hands of ND, the Big 12 is the only practical choice if ND wants to remain in the conversation. And THAT likely happens ONLY if ND jumps in with both feet. The Big 12 probably won't go for a football-only associate status with ND's remaining sports staying in the Big East.

But I agree with UNI88 in that ND will blindly cling to the status quo, thereby becoming irrelevant (if they weren't already).

My understanding is that the AD's have essentially agreed that the playoff should consist of the 4 best teams as chosen by a selection panel. If that is the case ND could make it in over a conference champ if they are ranked higher by the panel.

If the BCS playoff does go in that direction, would Boise stay in the Big East?

Good point. Also if they stick with the selection committee, ND would be fine so long as they have the resume to back up being a top 4 team. Maybe this ND Oly sports move is just related to the BE losing the bulk of its quality members.

The real question is...when will NDSU move its program compete into the OLYMPICS?

Notre Dame, Big East reach deal;
Irish to join ACC in July


Notre Dame and the Big East reached an agreement Tuesday morning that allows the Irish to leave the league on July 1, 2013.

This paves the way for their expedited move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, where they will begin competing this fall.

"Notre Dame now looks forward with great anticipation to becoming a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference," Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. "We are thrilled to join a great group of institutions who share our commitment to the integration of athletics into the academic mission of the university. Our coaches and student-athletes across our athletic programs are truly excited about the new challenges ahead."

Notre Dame is coming to the ACC early;
football arrangement still won't start until 2014


Notre Dame will become an official partial member of the ACC on July 1 this year after coming to an agreement to leave the fractured Big East. The decision was described by the league as "amicable."

That means the ACC will welcome Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame this year, making it a 15-team league for most sports.


ACC commissioner John Swofford released this statement about today's news:

“Our conference, schools and fans are delighted that Notre Dame will join the ACC on July 1, 2013. The addition of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, followed by Louisville in 2014, positions us extremely well with an outstanding collection of 15 member institutions.

“As was previously announced, our annual five games against Notre Dame in football will begin with the 2014 season. This not only will enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement.

ND will play home-and-home series vs:
