This young pre-season tournament started today.
In the first game, arrogant Cincinnati-Xavier was taken out by TD-underdog Stockton-UOP 70-67. Game 2 saw Moraga-St. Mary's beat Philadelphia-Drexel 76-64. This sets up a UOP-SMC semifinal that many are taking as a preview of conference games in the WCC next season; apparently, a mid-game interview with the WCC commish didn't sit too well with the Big West Conference, which is hosting this tournament.
Games later tonight feature Houston-Rice against Atlanta-Georgia Tech and Des Moines-Drake vs. Cal for berths in the other semifinal. AFTER the tournament, St. Mary's is taking advantage of a quirky NCAA rule that states that within 14 days of a "multi-team event", any two teams from that MTE can face off in an additional game that does not affect bracketing or the final outcome of the tournament. So, while the finals are scheduled for Sun 25 NOV, St. Mary's and Drake will play a "non-bracketed game" on 05 DEC.
