Liberty won BOTH Big South hoops titles this weekend.
The boys will be the Cinderella miracle workers of the NCAAs as they took out #1S Chuck South 87-76 this afternoon for the Flames' third Big South title and first since 2004. #5N Liberty is 15-20 on the season, and started 0-8. The only other teams to start as poorly yet make the NCAAs were 2007-2008 Mississippi Valley State (0-8), 1998-1999 Florida A&M (0-10), and 2009-2010 Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-11). Liberty is only the second team to make the tournament with 20+ losses (2007-2008 Coppin State 16-20 at time of NCAA Tournament start). Liberty placed three players on the All-Tournament team (including an MVP with 17 triples in four tournament games), while Chuck South claimed the other two. This tournament marked the first time all season Liberty won more than three consecutive games.

The #1-seed Liberty girls team (27-6) won its 15th Big South championship (and second straight) with a 54-45 win over #7-seed Longwood. The Flames were supported by a +29 rebound differential and stout defense.
Liberty dominated the All-Tournament team, providing the MVP and two other players, leaving only singleton representatives from Longwood and Campbell.
This is only the second double championship in Big South history; Liberty owns the other one, earned in 2004.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.
