Creighton to accept Big East invitation
Image

Creighton University plans to accept an offer to join the Big East Conference, The World-Herald has learned.

Its entry into the newly reconfigured, basketball-centric conference will have the Bluejays annually going to battle on the court against iconic programs like Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova.

It also will mean leaving the Missouri Valley Conference, the league that has been the longtime home to Creighton athletic teams in all sports.

CBS: MVC looking at Missouri-Kansas City

The Missouri Valley Conference has looked at UMKC as a possible replacement for recently departed Creighton, a source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com

While interest in UMKC was termed perhaps preliminary at best and in the early stages at the moment, the conference is actively seeking what most likely will be a Midwest replacement for Creighton, which announced earlier this month it is leaving for the Big East.

Other schools mentioned for the Valley -- Belmont and Oral Roberts -- aren't believed to be serious candidates at the moment.

Report: Loyola to Missouri Valley
CHICAGO -- Loyola of Chicago has accepted an invitation to the Missouri Valley Conference and is leaving the Horizon League, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person, speaking Sunday on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced, says some details were still being finalized. A formal announcement is expected this week, with the move taking effect on July 1.

Several outlets reported the switch over the weekend. It comes at a busy time for the school.

Loyola hired Sheryl Swoopes as women's basketball coach last week, hoping the three-time WNBA MVP can raise the profile of that program. The school in recent years has opened a new multipurpose athletic facility and remodeled its arena.

Ranking the 24-Hour College Hoops Marathon (CBS Sports – August 13, 2013)

11. Western Kentucky at Wichita State (1 a.m., Nov. 12, ESPN2): Gregg Marshall and the Shockers are coming off a shocking (sorry) Final Four run, and they do return Cleanthony Early and three starters. Western Kentucky has made back-to-back runs to the NCAA tournament.

Missouri Valley Announces ESPN Telecast Plans
Image

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Valley Conference will have a 46-game telecast package on ESPN networks during the 2013-14 academic year, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.

The Valley, which is in the third year of a five-year agreement with ESPN, will clear 26 men’s basketball telecasts on ESPN networks. ESPN will carry the events on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.

An additional 20 other MVC contests (volleyball in addition to women’s basketball and baseball) are featured on the package this year.

"Through its various platforms, ESPN provides us with an essential national promotional vehicle," Elgin said.

"Our institutions recognized the importance of ESPNU and ESPN3 in the formative days of both outlets, and as a result, ESPN has rewarded the league with heightened exposure."

For the ninth-consecutive season, CBS Sports will air the title game of the MVC Men’s Basketball Championship. CBS, which sublicenses the rights from ESPN, will televise the contest on Sunday, March 9, at 1 p.m. Central.

"Having the championship game of your men’s basketball tournament shown on CBS Sports speaks for itself," said Elgin. "The Arch Madness final starts postseason conference tournament coverage for CBS Sports, and we are grateful to be part of the excitement that builds toward Selection Sunday (March 16)."

Valley Announces 36-Game Network TV Package
Image

ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Valley Conference will produce a 36-telecast television package on FOX Sports Midwest in 2013-14, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today.
The Valley, with Niles Media Group of Kansas City serving as its production company, has worked in conjunction with FOX Sports Midwest -- along with its sister regional cable outlets FOX Sports Indiana and FOX Sports Kansas City -- and Comcast SportsNet Chicago to clear all basketball and Olympic sport telecasts.
FOX College Sports will also distribute all basketball and Olympic sport championship telecasts on a national basis.
“Our television network has made great strides since we made the decision to bring its operation in-house, beginning with the 1993-94 academic year,” Elgin said.
“From modest beginnings, we now produce all of our network men’s and women’s basketball contests in high definition, televise all nine games from the men’s basketball tournament and continue to air the title contests from six additional championships, including our women’s basketball tournament,” said Elgin.
“Very few NCAA Division I athletic leagues have a relationship with a regional cable partner like the Missouri Valley Conference has with FOX Sports Midwest and Senior Vice President/General Manager Jack Donovan,” said Jack R. Watkins, MVC Associate Commissioner.

Missouri Valley preview:
Wichita State aims to follow last year’s Final Four with another special season

Image

Wichita State's most dynamic weapon is 6-foot-8 forward Cleanthony Early, a Valley player of the year candidate who is capable of scoring from the paint and the perimeter. In five NCAA tournament games last season, Early averaged 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, a stretch highlighted by his 24-point, 10-rebound outburst against Louisville.

No Valley team besides Wichita State and Indiana State appears capable of contending for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but Northern Iowa, Bradley and Missouri State boast the most returning talent.

MVC Men's Basketball Notebook - Dec. 30
Image

And It Begins
The nation’s second oldest Division I athletic conference begins its 107th season of basketball on Jan. 1, with three conference games scheduled on New Year’s Day. By Sunday (Jan. 5), each league team will have played two MVC games.

Still Perfect
Through games of Sunday, Dec. 29, a total of eight Division I teams are unbeaten:

13-0: Arizona, Ohio State, Wichita State, Wisconsin
12-0: Oregon, Syracuse, Toledo
11-0: Iowa State

Best Starts Ever
Wichita State (13-0) will next look to extend a school record with a 14th victory to start a season when the Shockers open conference play at Southern Illinois. Counting WSU, a total of 18 MVC teams have started a season 13-0 or better; the last was Illinois State in 2008-09 (The Redbirds started 14-0 that year). Only 11 teams in the MVC’s 106-year history have started a season with 14 straight wins.

Perfect on Jan. 1 ... ?
Since 1994-95 (the previous 19 seasons), there have been 114 total NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams that were unbeaten on Jan. 1. Notably ...
•90 of those 114 made the NCAA Tournament
•52 of those 90 teams reached the Sweet 16
•17 of those 52 reached the Final Four
•5 of those 17 won the national title

Picked Last, Great Start
Drake has the league’s second-best RPI (71) and fourth-best non-conference schedule strength (143). Drake’s three losses have been at Saint Mary’s (by 4 points), to nationally ranked Iowa, and an overtime loss to New Mexico State. The Bulldogs were 3-1 on the road; the last time Drake won three road non-league games was during 2007-08 (when it went 28-5, won the league, and went to the NCAA Tournament).

Shockers at No. 7 This Week
Wichita State is ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the AP Poll this week (Dec. 30). The Shockers finished 2012-13 ranked No. 4 in the coaches poll but were not ranked in the final regular-season AP poll. Only five MVC teams have cracked the AP Top 10 in the past 20 years, and before this year (Dec. 23) Wichita State was the last to do it -- in 2006.

Valley of Doom?

For the first time in its history, Illinois State defeated a Big East school, a ranked school, and a Big Ten school in the same year. Wichita State’s resume includes two SEC wins and a Big East win. A list of key wins in 2013-14:

N17 -- Indiana State 83, #21 Notre Dame 70
N17 -- Illinois State 68, Northwestern 64
N25 -- Wichita State 90, DePaul 72
N29 -- Missouri State 73, Texas A&M 67
D7 -- Illinois State 81, #25 Dayton 75
D14 -- UNI 77, VCU 68
D14 -- Wichita State 70, Tennessee 61
D17 -- Wichita State 72, Alabama 67
D22 -- Illinois State 69, DePaul 64

No. 2 Wichita State finishes perfect regular season with rout

Baker finished with 13 points, Cleanthony Early led the way with 19 and the second-ranked Shockers rolled to a 68-45 victory over Missouri State on Saturday, becoming the first team since Saint Joseph's in 2004 to enter its conference tournament unbeaten.

No. 2 Wichita St. pounds Missouri St. to reach 33-0

No shock: Wichita State will enter NCAA tournament 34-0

ST. LOUIS — The locker room was silent, players sat motionless. This was 39 minutes before No. 2 Wichita State tipped off against Indiana State on Sunday – an unblemished record on the line – and 14 players sat before their head coach, Gregg Marshall.

Standing in front of a dry erase board, he delivered a blunt message in 43 seconds.

The Shockers charged onto the court and beat Indiana State 83-69 in the Missouri Valley Conference title game before a Scottrade Center crowd awash in yellow and black.

Wichita State (34-0) will become the first team to enter the NCAA tournament undefeated since a star-studded UNLV team accomplished the feat in 1991. The 1975-76 Indiana team was the last undefeated national champion, which means an undefeated champion has never been crowned since the tournament expanded to 64 teams (now 68) in 1985.

Loyola draws less than half capacity of their less than 4k capacity arena in a metro of 10 million people

BTW, on this topic UAB and the MVC are talking...so...that could be nice.

Likely go to 12 with probably Belmont, Murray State (football would be an issue), Valpo...outside look at ORU and/or Denver. Real outside chance that NMSU would get a phone call as well to figure out what they *really* want to do
