Russell (now a sophomore) was the leading returning scorer for the Lumberjacks (14.4 ppg). Apparently he wasn't getting along with second-year head coach Jack Murphy.

This departure really hurts. NAU just lost an exhibition game to Arizona Christian despite 27 points from Russell.
