SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After helping lead Western Carolina to its first Southern Conference division title since 1996, Harouna Mutombo was named the league’s Freshman of the Year by media who cover the SoCon.
Mutombo, who led the Catamounts in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (4.5 rpg), was also a second-team All-SoCon selection.

Appalachian State’s Kellen Brand joined Mutombo on the second team, and WCU junior Brandon Giles was named to the third team.
WCU (16-14) will open Southern Conference tournament play against either College of Charleston or UNC Greensboro at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Davidson’s Stephen Curry was picked as Player of the Year, and The Citadel’s Ed Conroy was named Coach of the Year.
The coaches are expected to release their all-conference picks on Thursday.
