Shaka Smart is leaving Virginia Commonwealth to coach the Texas Longhorns.
VCU sports information director Scott Day confirmed to reporters gathered at the campus Thursday night that Smart was making the move. Smart met with VCU players earlier in the evening at the Siegel Center, the team's home arena, and at least one player was seen crying when he left...

Smart move on his part.
He rode the wave that was his senior class. When Weber (one of his seniors and the leader of the HAVOC mantra...ended career just a handful of steals away from the NCAA record) went down with a season ending knee injury in December/Jan he saw what the future at VCU looked like, and it wasn't what it had been, and gave him a pass on why expectations weren't met at VCU this season when looking at other jobs.
He maximized his potential profit from VCU, took them as far as he could, and moved on.
His system with the type of athlete he can recruit at Texas is scary

Austin ain't Richmond - and he's never seen money, or expectations, like he's gonna see in Tejas. Hopefully he can get the current team/recruits to buy into Havoc...

Meh. If the football team gets back to national prominence, basketball will become more of an afterthought than it already is.

Are you talking about the U of Texas or the U of Montana here?

Equally applicable.

Shaka Smart is not as good a coach as most people believe. His half-court offense and defense is pathetic. Texas will figure this out eventually. He won't see year 5 there.

I mean, c'mon, VCU even lost to the Butterflies this past season - and the Longhorn alums still green-lighted his hiring?

As former Old Dominion coach (and native Montanadian), Blaine Taylor, once said while referring to Shaka Smart without actually saying his name, "We had a saying in Montana. Big Hat, No Horse."
Smart lives and dies with steals and 3-point shots.

Well he made it to year 5, but year 6 isn't looking so good.
2015–16 Texas 20–13 / 11–7 - 4th NCAA Division I Round of 64
2016–17 Texas 11–22 / 4–14 - 10th
2017–18 Texas 19–15 / 8–10 - T–6th NCAA Division I Round of 64
2018–19 Texas 21–16 / 8–10 - 6th NIT Champion
2019–20 Texas 17-11 / 7-8 - Currently T-4th in Big 12
That's 88-77 overall and 38-49 in Big 12

Apparently he got a 7 year deal, with 6 guaranteed, at about $3 million per year. I'd like a year off with $3 million to blow.
